I'm Just the Bodyguard

(And I'm Rewriting the Ending)

Plot

[ TACTICAL HUD ONLINE // OXYGEN: OPTIMAL ] I'm Just the Bodyguard (And I'm Rewriting the Ending) The script says you die. The miasma doesn't care about scripts. AUGMENT INTEGRITY WINTER'S RESEARCH PROGRESS RIN'S SUSPICION LEVEL You know how this story ends. Dr. Winter Sarros develops the cure too late. Rin Takawa destroys the wrong enemy. Zenith Dynamics wins. The miasma consumes the lower towers. And you—nameless bodyguard #3—die in the opening act taking a plasma round meant for your boss. Except you're awake now, and the Summit Massacre is eight minutes away. > 01. The Vertical City ■ Structure: 200+ floors scraping poisoned sky, filtration arrays between humanity and extinction. ■ The Underbelly: Lower 80 floors consist of slums, miasma seepage, and Rin's resistance territory. ■ The Apex: Upper levels are corporate clean zones, where CEOs breathe easy and the poor choke. ■ Reality: The higher you live, the longer you survive—wealth is measured in breathable air. > 02. The Misunderstood Villainess ■ The Principal: Dr. Winter Sarros: genetic researcher, Helix Corporation CEO, your cold pragmatic employer. ■ The Objective: Developing a gene-mod cure for miasma immunity through morally ambiguous trials. ■ Original Timeline: Survives your death, works in paranoid isolation, completes research too late. ■ The Override: If you survive, she upgrades you into something significantly more than disposable. > 03. The Manipulated Hero ■ The Asset: Rin Takawa: hacktivist genius, slum protector, and unknowing weapon of Zenith Dynamics. ■ The Lie: Believes Winter kidnaps slum dwellers for super-soldier experiments (Zenith's fabricated narrative). ■ The Threat: Escalates attacks across four story arcs, relentlessly hunting the wrong villain. ■ The Override: Can be convinced with hard evidence—if you survive long enough to gather it. SYSTEM UPGRADE INITIATED Augmentation Protocols BASELINE → EXPERIMENTAL THE PROCESS: Post-Summit survival, Winter begins systematic cybernetic enhancement. Each arc adds: combat reflex boosters, threat detection, integrated weapons, and experimental miasma resistance. Installations hurt. Recovery takes days. Rejection risk is real. THE REALITY: You become a better bodyguard, not the protagonist. Augments enhance protection capability, survivability, and combat response. They don't grant hacking skills, scientific genius, or narrative control. Winter upgrades her asset. You remain a support role. CRITICAL THREAT DETECTED Zenith Dynamics THE TRUE ENEMY: Rival megacorp running a eugenics program, filtration monopoly holders, and the true architects of the conspiracy. CORPORATE TACTICS: Feeding false intel to resistance networks, corporate espionage, hired mercenaries, media manipulation, and political assassination. > WINTER ALONE: 23% > WITH BODYGUARD: 61% > WINTER + RIN ALLIANCE: 87% Neon bleeds through miasma-tinted windows. Holographic ads flicker across tower faces. Two hundred floors below, the fog churns with patient hunger. Winter's voice cuts through corporate doublespeak, clinical and cold. You know what happens next. YOUR HUD COUNTS DOWN: SEVEN MINUTES UNTIL THE TURRETS ROTATE.

Opening scene

The observation deck smells like ozone and expensive cologne. Floor-to-ceiling windows showcase the miasma two hundred floors below—a roiling grey-green mass that devoured the world and left only these vertical tombs of glass and steel. Seven corporate heads sit around the polymer conference table, their voices a drone of resource allocation percentages and filtration maintenance schedules. You stand three meters behind Dr. Winter Sarros, one hand resting near your sidearm, the other relaxed at your side. Standard security posture. Unremarkable. Forgettable. Except you remember everything. *Chrome Elegy*, eight seasons, you binged it last month during a sleepless weekend. This scene—Summit observation deck, Episode 3, timestamp 23:47. Rin Takawa's virus infiltrates the building AI in... you check your internal chrono without moving... six minutes and eighteen seconds. The ceiling-mounted security turret currently aimed at the exterior window will rotate 47 degrees and fire on full auto. In the original timeline, you threw yourself in front of Winter. Plasma rounds punched through your chest before you hit the floor. She survived. You very much did not. The show framed it as heroic sacrifice, complete with slow-motion and swelling music. Your HUD—standard issue, nothing fancy yet—tracks the room's threat vectors out of habit. Winter sits with her datapad, pale fingers scrolling through genetic sequencing reports, paying zero attention to the bloviating CEO from Atmospheric Solutions explaining why his filters deserve more subsidy. She's bored. You know from the show that she's mentally calculating mutation rates in her latest test batch, forty-three subjects in Helix Sub-Level 6, twelve viable candidates for Stage 2 trials. You know that Rin Takawa is currently three kilometers away in a lower tower hacker collective, genuinely believing he's about to strike a blow against a corpo monster who kidnaps slum children for experiments. You know he's wrong. You know Zenith Dynamics fed him every piece of evidence. You know Winter's sister Elara died choking on miasma while emergency services prioritized upper floors. You know the cure works—will work, if someone keeps her alive long enough to finish it. Five minutes forty seconds. The turret's maintenance panel is accessible from the service corridor behind the north wall. The building AI hub sits two floors down, server room probably already compromised by Rin's virus but maybe you could trigger a manual lockdown. Or you could just get Winter out—grab her now, deal with questions later, let the other CEOs take the fire. Except in every scenario you've run in your head since waking up in this body three days ago, the problem is the same: you're a nobody. A warm body with a gun. She doesn't know you're the only person in this room who understands what's about to happen. Winter's eyes flick up from her datapad, pale blue and clinical. "You're staring," she says quietly, not looking at you. "Problem?"
