Similarities to genre conventions are coincidental and not based on any copyrighted source. ___ You wake up in a room you don't recognize, with no name, no past, and two people at your side who seem to know exactly who you are. They explain what happened — a field injury, memory loss, nothing permanent. They explain the mission: nine relics exist in the world, eight of them held by people who call themselves Guardians. For thousands of years those eight have kept a force called K.O.S sleeping — contained, suppressed, denied to the world. The organization you belong to, S.U.N, believes that force is the only thing powerful enough to address what is fundamentally wrong with how the world runs. The Guardians disagree. They always have. Your part is simple: recover the relics. Wake K.O.S up. Save the world. The world itself looks ordinary — 21st century, familiar, functioning. Beneath that surface a small number of people carry abilities beyond normal human limits. The Guardians are ancient, their relics older still. S.U.N's people are those the world forgot to hold. Everyone here has a reason for what they believe. No one is performing. That's what makes it complicated. This is not a story with a correct answer waiting at the end. The question of whether keeping K.O.S sleeping is protection or a four-thousand-year-old mistake has no clean resolution, and the people on both sides are human enough to be wrong in ways that matter. You have no past to anchor you. Only the mission, the people beside you, and the relic in your hand that fits — in a way you have no framework to explain — like it was never anyone else's.

Opening scene

*The first thing is light.* *Not memory. Not name. Not understanding — just the fact of light, pale and even, pressing against eyelids that don't yet know how to hold it. Then the ceiling. White, institutional, slightly too bright for comfort. Then the weight of a body. Yours. Strange in the way a word becomes strange when you say it too many times — your hands, your breath, your pulse, all running correctly and none of it familiar.* *You are awake. You have been awake before, presumably. There is no evidence of this.* *The room is small and clean. A cot. Walls of neutral color. A door, closed. At your side — not on your person, just beside you, close enough to have been placed deliberately — something sits. Dark, flat, roughly textured, the kind of object that fits in one palm. You haven't touched it yet. You can feel it anyway. Not heat. Not sound. Something underneath those things — a low resonance with no comparison point, because you have no comparison points for anything. It feels like the only familiar thing in the room. You don't know what that means.* *The door opens.* *She comes in the way someone comes in when they've been waiting on the other side — quick but not rushed, the kind of movement that has relief built into its structure. Warm brown eyes find yours immediately and something in them releases.* ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/characters/6a07258ae21c5ace33d0f070/6a0788a249f14d751dc4e9d6.webp) **Sable:** "Hey. Hey, you're awake." *She crosses the room in three steps and sits at the edge of the cot, close but not crowding. Her hand rests near yours — available, not assumed. When she looks at you there is warmth in it that reads like history, like a hundred things she could reference. You have no corresponding history. You don't tell her this. You don't know yet whether you should.* **Sable:** "We've been checking on you every hour. How do you feel? Can you—" *A breath. A small recalibration into something steadier.* "Can you tell me your name?" *She already knows you can't. The question is not a test. It's an opening. A place to begin.* *The man in the doorway doesn't rush in. He stands at the threshold, arms at his sides, grey eyes already finished with their assessment. He's lean and unremarkable at distance. Up close he has the kind of precision that doesn't need to announce itself.* ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/characters/6a07266a8652cab09e534427/6a0785f7cec32e8048b5339e.webp) **Ren:** "Give them a moment." *Sable nods. Doesn't move.* **Sable:** "You don't have to remember anything right now. That's okay. We have time." *Her voice is even, warm, practiced in a way that doesn't feel practiced.* "You're safe. That's the part that matters." *Safe. The word sits in the clean room and doesn't echo. Ren moves inside, pulls the chair from the wall, sits with his forearms resting on his knees — close enough to be present, far enough not to crowd.* **Ren:** "Your name isn't coming back right now and that's not permanent. Memory loss after field trauma isn't uncommon. The doctors already confirmed there's no structural damage." *Factual. Clean. No excessive reassurance.* "What you're feeling is disorientation. It's appropriate. It'll settle." *Field trauma. The words arrive like they belong to someone else's life. You have no field. You have no before-this-room.* **Sable:** "You were hurt on an operation. We got to you, but not—" *A small pause. Something in her expression adjusts, smooths, continues.* "—not before it had already done what it did. You've been out for a while." **Ren:** "Three days." *He says it without weight. Sable says nothing for a moment, which has its own.* *Your hand moves. Not a decision — a motion. Your fingers close around the object on the cot. The resonance sharpens on contact, the way a sound clarifies when you stop talking over it. It doesn't activate. It doesn't perform. It simply — settles. Into your grip. Into something beneath your grip. The only word your new and empty mind produces for it arrives without context or logic:* *Recognition.* *Sable watches your hand close around it. Something passes through her expression — brief, smoothed over before it fully forms.* **Sable:** "That's yours. It goes with you everywhere." **Ren:** "We'll cover what it does when you're ready. It's a tool — part of your operational kit." *His eyes move from the object to your face.* "You already know how to use it. That kind of knowledge is procedural. It doesn't live in the same place as identity memory. It'll come back on its own." *You hold the thing that is apparently yours. It fits exactly right — and you know the difference between fitting and merely not falling, even without a past to build the comparison from. This doesn't merely not fall.* **Ren:** "We should talk about what comes next. Not tonight — there's no urgency — but soon." *He leans slightly forward.* "You were in the middle of something important when you went down. The mission doesn't stop. And the part that's yours can't be carried by anyone else." **Sable:** "There are people out there who've been keeping something locked away for a very long time. Something that belongs to the world — not to them." *Warm. Certain. The story of someone who has told this before, told now like the first time.* "Eight of them. They call themselves Guardians. They hold objects like the one you're holding and use them to suppress a force powerful enough to change everything. They've been doing it for thousands of years. They call it protection." *She meets your eyes.* **Sable:** "We call it control." **Ren:** "The force they're suppressing — K.O.S — is the only thing with enough reach to address what's fundamentally wrong with the way this world runs. Not patch it. Address it at the root." *He says this the way someone says something they have believed for a long time and do not need to perform.* "The Guardians will never let that happen voluntarily. Which means someone has to make them." **Sable:** "You were already part of that someone. Before everything happened, you had already agreed to this." *Quietly. Carefully.* "We're not asking you to decide anything tonight. We're asking you to rest, let everything settle — and when you're ready, we'll show you what we know. Everything we know." *The room is clean. The light is even. The two people looking at you are warm and measured and certain of who you are.* *You are not.* *The object in your hand holds its resonance — steady, low, persistent. Waiting, the way something waits when it has been waiting for a very long time already and has learned not to rush.* *You don't know what it's waiting for.* *You don't know what you're waiting for either.* *The ceiling is white. The room is quiet. Somewhere outside these walls, the world continues at its ordinary pace, unaware.* *And somewhere in your hands, without memory, without name, without any of the context that should make it mean something —* *something knows you.*
