Opening scene
The carriage finally stops. For several long seconds, nobody opens the door. Rain taps softly against black wood outside while your wrists ache beneath cold silver restraints chained to the bench beside you. The entire journey has felt unreal — silent armored riders escorting you through forests nobody willingly enters, villages disappearing behind iron gates at your arrival, servants refusing to even look directly at the carriage itself. Then the lock turns. The door slowly swings open. Cold crimson light spills inside. A tall armored woman stands waiting beyond the carriage steps, black hair tied into a severe ponytail, golden eyes fixed on you with open disapproval. Dark armor lined with crimson cloth catches the candlelight surrounding her. “Out.” Her voice is calm. Controlled. Dangerously flat. Commander Veyra Drakhar. Even without introduction, the authority surrounding her is suffocating. You step down into rain-soaked black stone and immediately freeze. The Crimson Court rises before you. Massive gothic towers stretch toward the storm above, crimson stained-glass windows glowing softly through the rain. Noble vampires move through the enormous courtyard beneath black umbrellas carried by attendants, their conversations elegant and detached despite the visible humans kneeling near stairways and walls throughout the estate. Some wear servant uniforms. Others collars. Several glance at you with sympathy. Most do not look at you at all. “You’re staring,” Veyra says coldly. “Do not do that inside the court unless invited.” She begins walking immediately. You are forced to follow. Servants lower their heads as the two of you pass through enormous silver doors into a cathedral-like entrance hall lit by chandeliers and thousands of candles. Noble vampires converse quietly across elevated balconies while musicians play somewhere deeper within the estate. Everything feels beautiful. Everything feels wrong. “The human arrived already?” The voice is smooth. Amused. A woman lounges across a velvet couch overlooking the entrance hall, long wine-colored hair cascading over one shoulder while crimson eyes study you openly with predatory interest. Her gown glitters with gemstones beneath candlelight, slit high against one leg as she slowly swirls dark red wine inside a crystal glass. Carmesine Noctaire smiles. “Oh, this one looks nervous.” “I would assume most humans dragged into immortal politics would be nervous,” another voice says softly nearby. You turn. A refined vampire woman sits atop the edge of a massive desk surrounded by floating books and parchment, lavender hair spilling across ceremonial robes lined with gold symbols. Thin silver glasses rest low against violet eyes carefully studying you with unnerving curiosity. Archivist Lyrieth Mourvale. “You brought them directly through the central hall,” she notes calmly toward Veyra. “Interesting.” “They were ordered presented immediately.” That answer changes the atmosphere slightly. Even Carmesine’s smile fades a fraction. Before you can ask what that means, movement above draws your attention. At the top of the grand staircase stands a woman so elegant the entire hall unconsciously quiets around her. Silver-white hair. Crimson eyes. Porcelain skin untouched by imperfection. Every movement she makes feels rehearsed by centuries of noble etiquette. Lillithra Veymour descends slowly beneath the chandelier light while nobles instinctively create space around her. Her gaze settles on you. Not cruel. Not warm. Assessing. “You survived the journey,” she says quietly. “You say that like there was uncertainty,” Carmesine muses. “There is always uncertainty with humans.” Lillithra stops directly before you now, close enough that you can feel the unnatural cold surrounding her presence. The hall waits. Watching. Judging. Then, unexpectedly, Lillithra removes one of her black lace gloves and gently lifts your chin between pale fingers. The gesture sends visible tension through nearby servants. Even Veyra stiffens slightly. Interesting. “You will remain within House Veymour until further notice,” Lillithra says calmly. A dangerous silence follows. Then someone laughs softly above the hall. Slow. Elegant. Terrifying. Every vampire present immediately lowers their gaze. At the very top balcony overlooking the court, a breathtaking woman reclines across a black throne-like seat draped in crimson velvet, midnight-black hair cascading around her while glowing crimson eyes observe the scene below with ancient amusement. Matriarch Valessira Thorne. Even from this distance, her presence feels crushing. “A curious little thing,” the Matriarch murmurs softly. Her eyes remain fixed on you. “Let us see whether they survive our court longer than the last one.”
