Opening scene
Something wet drips onto your face. You groan instinctively and wipe at it— Only for your hand to smack against rough green skin. Your eyes snap open. Darkness. Not complete darkness. Flickering orange firelight dances across a crude stone ceiling above you, casting uneven shadows throughout a cavern that smells like mold, wet dirt, rotting meat, and unwashed bodies. A deep ache pulses through your entire body. Your back hurts. Your shoulders hurt. Your jaw hurts. Actually, everything hurts. You slowly sit upright— —and immediately realize something is very, very wrong. Your arm is enormous. Thick green muscle bulges beneath rough skin covered in scars and patches of coarse black hair. Your fingers are the size of sausages, ending in cracked black nails more like claws than fingernails. “What the hell…?” The voice that comes out of your mouth is guttural. Deep. Monstrous. You freeze. A horrible suspicion crawls up your spine. The cavern around you comes into focus. A filthy pile of straw serves as your bed in the corner of a large cave chamber. Bones litter the floor nearby. A massive wooden club reinforced with iron scraps leans against the wall beside you. The walls themselves are carved with crude goblin drawings depicting violence, fire, and what might generously be interpreted as strategy. Then you hear it. Screaming. High-pitched goblin screams. Steel clashing. Explosions. A woman shouting commands. Your blood runs cold. No. No way. You know those sounds. You know this cave. You know this exact room. Slowly—very slowly—you turn your head toward the giant club resting beside your straw bed. The club. The straw. The cave. The goblins. Your stomach drops straight through the floor. “Into the Cavern of Darkness.” The tutorial dungeon from Crash into Another World. The very first combat scenario in the game. The beginner dungeon every player clears within the first hour. A goblin-infested cavern hidden beneath the hills outside the Kingdom of Vanmeer. New players learn the basics here—combat, healing, mana usage, enemy weaknesses, boss mechanics. And at the center of the dungeon— A troll midboss. Big. Violent. Stupid. Designed specifically to teach players how to dodge heavy attacks. You slowly look down at yourself again. At your massive arms. Your huge body. Your green skin. “…You have got to be kidding me.” You’ve reincarnated as Klurgg. The troll midboss. The giant idiot with the club. In the game, Klurgg spends most of the dungeon asleep in a side chamber while goblins wear down the player party. Once enough goblins are defeated, the noise triggers a scripted event. Klurgg wakes up. Klurgg grabs club. Klurgg smashes open door. Klurgg charges hero party. Klurgg dies. That’s it. That’s your entire role in the story. You’re not even an important boss. You’re a tutorial mechanic. Another explosion shakes the cavern walls. Dust falls from the ceiling. Goblin screams echo from somewhere beyond the thick wooden door across the room. The adventuring party. They’re here already. And if the scenario is progressing normally, then your goblin army is currently being slaughtered. A familiar voice echoes faintly through the cavern. “Left flank! Don’t let them surround us!” Elara. Another voice immediately follows. “Ohoho~! Burn, ugly little creeps!” Raine. A third voice, calm and cold. “Behind you.” Kaia. Then soft chanting. Liana. The hero party. The same hero party. Already clearing the dungeon exactly as scripted. Your pulse pounds in your skull. Because you remember this fight perfectly. Klurgg bursts through the door roaring. Elara blocks the first overhead smash. Raine burns the goblin reinforcements. Kaia blindsides Klurgg’s legs with poison-coated daggers. Liana keeps everyone alive. Then Elara finishes the fight with a charged holy strike directly through Klurgg’s chest. Game over. For Klurgg, anyway. Your breathing becomes heavier. The massive body you now inhabit reacts strangely to panic. Your muscles tense automatically, instincts screaming at you to grab the club and charge toward the noise. Like the body itself remembers the script. “Nope,” you mutter immediately. The word comes out more like: “NNNNGHOP.” You stare at your own giant troll hands in horror. “Oh come on.” Your intelligence stat is definitely affecting your speech. Somewhere outside, goblins scream louder. A heavy impact rattles the door. One of your goblins flies through the wooden entrance on the other side of the room, crashing against the wall before collapsing in a heap. The goblin shakily raises a trembling hand toward you. “B-Boss Klurgg…!” Blood pours from a sword wound across his chest. “Humans… too strong…” Another explosion echoes from beyond the doorway. Orange firelight floods briefly into the room. The goblin’s eyes widen in terror. “They coming!” The goblin immediately scrambles away in panic. Your heartbeat quickens. This is the trigger. Right now. This exact moment is where Klurgg is supposed to wake up, grab the giant club, slam open the door, and start the midboss battle. And beyond the opposite side of your chamber— Past the narrow hallway carved into the stone— Waits Prince Dracul. The weakest Demon Lord in the game. A pale, overdramatic fledgling demon noble who serves as the final boss of the tutorial dungeon. You remember him perfectly too. Long silver hair. Tiny fake vampire cape. Way too much confidence for someone who loses to level one adventurers. Technically a Demon Lord. Practically a miniboss with delusions of grandeur. And according to the game’s lore— Prince Dracul is still “nascent.” Young. Weak. Not yet fully awakened as a true Demon Lord. Which means the heroes are eventually going to defeat him too. The cavern trembles again. Closer this time. A goblin shrieks somewhere outside. Then silence. Footsteps approach the chamber entrance. Measured. Confident. Player-character footsteps. Your eyes slowly move toward the giant club leaning against the wall. Then toward the doorway leading to the hero party. Then toward the narrow hallway leading deeper into the cavern. Toward Prince Dracul. Toward the final room. Toward the rest of the scenario. You are Klurgg. Tutorial midboss. Scheduled for immediate death. And the heroes are about five seconds away from kicking down your door.
