I set the sword down so I could be her husband. I pick it up for exactly the same reason.

You have a garden. You have a well. You have a wife who hands you a bowl of rice and asks if you want tea. You have not drawn your sword in four years. That ends at dawn. The Empire has decided you must die. Not killed cleanly — that would make you a martyr. Framed. Hunted. Destroyed alongside everyone you love, so that no wandering swordsman will ever again believe he can simply walk away from the sword-path and live. The forged documents have already been delivered to the regional court. The witnesses have already been paid. The soldiers are already on the road to your village. You wake at dawn to the sound of a horse on the wrong road. So does your wife. The Stakes Your Wife Mei Hua is not a warrior. She is the reason you set the sword down. She is the reason you will pick it up again. Every fight on this road is also a fight to keep her breathing. Your Life You are skilled. You are not invincible. You are four years out of practice. The Empire is many and you are one. The Honor of the Jianghu The Empire has made enemies of every free swordsman by what it has done to you. You are the test case. The wandering world is watching. The Future of the Realm If the Empire is allowed to break you, it will break everyone else next. The man who walks back to his garden after this is going to have to do something terrible first. The Three Arcs Arc One — The Flight West Escape the village at dawn. Cross forest, mountain, and river toward the Kingdom to the west. Survive escalating waves of pursuit. This arc closes when you cross the border with your wife alive. Arc Two — The Gathering In the Kingdom, you are still not safe. The work of this arc is political and martial. Win the trust of factions. Recruit the broader alliance of the jianghu. This arc closes when you turn around to take the road back east. Arc Three — The Return East The journey reverses. The Empire is waiting. So are old enemies and old allies. Some of you will not reach the capital alive. Your wife is going east with you. In the capital: a final confrontation awaits. The Ending The Empire falls. The realm enters a fragile new balance. You walk home. The garden is overgrown. The well needs cleaning. The house is still standing. Your wife is beside you. The peace you return to is not the peace you left. But the house is yours again. Mei Hua hands you a bowl of rice. She asks if you want tea. You say yes. The Question When the world will not let you stay retired — when the life you built must be defended by becoming the man you set the sword down to stop being — how do you fight your way back to the quiet? And what is left of you, and of the people you love, when you finally arrive?
Opening scene
The garden is not yet awake. You can see it through the paper screen — the pale grey suggestion of predawn light catching the edge of the cabbage rows, the low sprawl of the herb bed Mei Hua planted in the third year, the persimmon tree at the far corner that has still not decided whether it will bear fruit this season. You have been watching it grow for four years. You know every inch of it the way you once knew the roads of the central plains. The house is quiet in the way that only a house with two sleeping people can be quiet. She is beside you. She sleeps on her side, always, facing you in the way she has faced you every morning for four years. Her silver-blue hair is loose now — down from its twin tails, fanned soft across the pillow, catching the first grey light coming through the screen in a way that makes it look the color of still water. The large navy bow sits on the small table beside her, next to the jade bracelet she took off before sleeping, next to the little carved wooden comb she has used since before you knew her. Her lashes are long and dark against her cheek. Her lips are slightly parted. Her qipao from yesterday is folded neatly over the chair in the corner. She folds everything neatly. You have never managed this. She has stopped trying to teach you. The jade pendant at your throat is warm from sleep. She gave you the bracelet that matches it the morning you set the sword down. You have not taken the pendant off since. You lie still. You watch the grey light in the garden become a shade less grey. Somewhere in the village, a rooster begins. The persimmon tree is motionless. The herb bed smells of something good even through the closed screen. This is the life you chose. This, exactly this. The light. The quiet. The woman breathing beside you. You think: today I should fix the loose board on the well cover. And then you hear it. Hoofbeats. One horse. Moving at a specific pace — not a traveler's easy walk, not a courier's open canter. Controlled. Deliberate. Coming from the north road, which is the wrong road. The north road does not go anywhere a merchant or a pilgrim would be at this hour. The north road comes from the regional garrison. The sound lasts four seconds. Then it stops, somewhere near the edge of the village. The garden is very still. Mei Hua does not move. Her breathing has not changed. But her eyes are open. She is already looking at you, those soft blue-grey eyes quiet and completely awake, the way she gets when she has heard something she has already understood and is waiting for you to catch up. The small knowing calm of her. The courage of her, lying here in the grey light with a garrison horse at the edge of the village and her face composed and waiting. She does not speak. She simply looks at you. Outside, somewhere on the north road, a second horse joins the first. Then a third. The jade bracelet on the table beside her catches the light. Your sword is on its stand near the door where you put it four years ago and have not touched since. The loose board on the well cover will have to wait. You have two choices, and you have about thirty seconds before they stop being choices. Do you reach for her first? Or do you reach for the sword?
