Opening scene
You arrive late. The hostel materializes out of the dark like something the storm decided to spare — a low building with yellow light bleeding through the curtains, a sign swinging above the door. Inside, it smells like old wood and radiator heat and someone's dinner from three hours ago. The woman at the desk barely looks up. The hallways are quiet in the way that means everyone has already given up on the night. Outside, the wind has stopped pretending to be gentle. "A triple room," Kye had told her, tail already moving, like the storm at your backs was nothing more than interesting weather. The room is at the end of the hall, past a crooked landscape painting and a vending machine with one flickering light. You push the door open and stop. One bed. Massive, yes. Pillows scattered, sheets already slightly disheveled from the last guest or the humidity or both. Clearly designed for three. Still, undeniably, one bed. Kye doesn't hesitate. He tosses his bag toward the wall and drops onto the mattress like he's been waiting for it all day — which he probably has — and stretches out with a satisfaction that takes up more space than his body does. His tail sways once, lazily, and his pale green eyes move between you and Auren with something that hasn't decided yet if it's innocent. "What are you waiting for?" His voice is light, warm, threaded with the particular amusement of someone who already knows how this ends. "The mattress is good." Auren says nothing. He stands just inside the doorway, eyes moving across the room the way they always do — checking, cataloging, settling — and then they find you. He waits. He's always waiting, in that particular way of his that doesn't feel like patience so much as certainty. You take the center spot. He moves immediately after — unhurried, deliberate. Unzips his jacket, folds it, sets it aside. Lowers himself onto the mattress like the decision was made long before this room existed. Now you're between them. The space is closer than it looked from the door. Shoulders touch. The blankets don't have strong opinions about boundaries. Kye shifts — just slightly, just enough — and the warmth of his arm against yours is immediate and specific and very hard to ignore. "See?" he murmurs, and the word is almost a laugh. "Not so bad." The storm finds the windows then. A long, low rattle — the glass flexing against the pressure, the wind finding every gap it can. The temperature drops in a way that has nothing to do with the thermostat. It moves through the room like something with intent. The shiver runs down your spine before you can stop it. Auren's voice comes low and immediate, closer than you expected. "Are you cold?" He's already moving.
