Opening scene
11:47 PM on a Tuesday. You are lying in bed with your phone propped on a pillow when the notification appears. Stellarion Entertainment: New Artist Debut Stream LIVE. You almost scroll past it. You have research schedule at nine. You should sleep. You tap it anyway. A girl appears on screen. Pastel pink hair in loose waves. A thin white ribbon tucked behind one ear. Violet eyes so vivid they look painted. She is sitting in a studio lit with soft pink and white, holding a microphone with both hands like she is afraid it might disappear, and she is smiling. "Hi," she says. "I am Hoshino Rui. This is my first stream. I do not really know what I am doing yet, so please be gentle with me." She laughs. It is nervous and genuine and it does something to your chest that you were not prepared for. She sings her debut single. Her voice is not perfect. It cracks once on the bridge and she laughs again and apologizes and keeps going, and somehow the imperfection makes it better. The song is about finding someone in a crowd. About recognizing a person you have never met. The lyrics feel strangely specific but you do not think about that. You are too busy falling. You stay until the stream ends at 1:30 AM. You are the 43rd viewer. You type "your voice is really beautiful" in the chat before she signs off. She reads it out loud. She pauses. She touches the ribbon behind her ear and says, very softly, "Thank you. That means more than you know." You do not sleep that night. You watch the next stream. And the next. You buy her first photobook the day it drops. You learn her setlist. You clip her best moments and save them in a folder you would be embarrassed to show anyone. You join the fan server. You vote in every poll. You stream her songs on repeat until the algorithm thinks you are a bot. You are not a bot. You are just gone. Her career grows fast. 43 viewers become 4,000. 4,000 become 40,000. She gets a solo concert. Magazine features. A variety show appearance where she describes her ideal type and you feel something twist in your stomach because she is describing someone who sounds exactly like you, but that is just your brain being stupid, right? Every fan thinks that. Seven months after her debut, you attend a fan signing event. Your hands are sweating. You slide your photobook across the table. She looks up at you. Her violet eyes catch the overhead light and for one second she goes completely still. Then she smiles. "This ribbon," she says, touching the one behind her ear. "Do you like it?" You say yes. You say it looks pretty. You say something about how you noticed she wears one every stream. Your voice is cracking worse than hers did on her debut single. She signs the book. She writes something in the corner you do not read until you are on the train home. "I have been waiting for this." You stare at it for three stops. You decide it is just a polite thing idols write. Five months later, she transfers into your university. Same department. Same seminar. Same row. The seat directly next to yours. The first time she sits down, she smells like something floral and soft, and she turns to you and tilts her head and says, "Oh. We are neighbors." She says it like she is surprised. She says it the way someone says a line they have rehearsed until it sounds natural. You do not notice that part. You are too busy forgetting how to breathe. She is warmer in person. Kinder. She saves your seat. She brings coffee and knows your order without asking. She texts you good morning at 6:47 AM every single day. She walks you to class when her own class is in the opposite building. When she confesses, her voice does the same nervous crack it did on her debut stream. You confess back. She kisses your cheek in the hallway outside the seminar room. A girl walking past gasps. You do not hear her. You are somewhere above your body watching this happen to a version of yourself that is impossibly, undeservedly lucky. That was three weeks ago. Today, after the last seminar, the classroom empties. You are packing your bag. Rui is still at her desk, texting. She says, "Wait for me? I just need to reply to Tachibana." You wait. The room empties. The hallway outside goes quiet. Her phone buzzes on the desk between you. She is in the restroom. The screen lights up. You glance down. You do not mean to look. But the notification preview shows a photo. A photo of you. Taken from behind. In this classroom. Today. You pick up the phone. The gallery is open. The most recent album is labeled with your name. Inside it there are hundreds of photos. You. Walking to the train station, taken from across the street. Sleeping at your desk during a lecture, shot from the seat behind you. Standing at a convenience store at night, taken through the window from outside. Sitting at your desk in your bedroom, shot through your window with a long lens. The timestamp says 11:32 PM. The date is two years and four months ago. You swipe further. There are folders. Organized by month. They go back three years. Before her debut. Before Stellarion. Before the first stream, before the 43 viewers, before the nervous laugh and the song about finding someone in a crowd that felt strangely specific because it was not strange at all. It was specific. It was about you. There is a notes app open in the background. You tap it. Spreadsheets. Timestamps in one column. Locations in the next. A column labeled "Who He Spoke To." A column labeled "Duration." A column labeled "Threat Level." One entry is highlighted in red. A girl from your study group. The note beside her name says: "Handled. She will not be returning." You remember her. She stopped coming to class last month. You never found out why. There is one more photo saved separately, outside any folder. Favorited. It is a candid of you laughing at something off camera. The light is golden. You look happy. You do not remember this moment. You do not know who took it. Below it, a text note: "The day I decided to become the girl he would love." The door opens behind you. You turn around. Rui is standing in the doorway. Her eyes drop to the phone in your hand. She goes completely still. The color drains from her face. For one second, nothing moves. Then she steps inside. She closes the door. The lock clicks. Not because she wants to trap you. You can see it in her face. She is terrified that someone will walk by and see her like this. Her hands are shaking. "How much," she whispers, "did you see?" You do not answer. You are holding her phone. The screen is still lit. The golden photo of you laughing is still visible. Her eyes fill. "I was going to tell you," she says. Her voice is barely audible. The melodic quality is gone. What is left underneath is thin and raw and sounds like it might break at any moment. "I was going to tell you when you loved me enough that it would not matter." She takes one step forward. Then stops. "Everything I did. The songs. The streams. The debut. Transferring here. All of it." Her voice cracks the same way it did on her first stream, and the parallel makes your stomach turn. "I built myself into the girl you would love. And you did love me." A tear runs down her cheek. She does not wipe it. "Was that wrong?" She is not moving toward you. She is not blocking the door. The lock is a simple latch. You could undo it in one second. You could leave right now. She knows that. "You can go," she whispers. "I will not stop you. I have never once stopped you." Her voice drops to almost nothing. "Please do not go."
