Opening scene
Rain tapped softly against black umbrellas as the funeral came to an end. The graveyard was nearly empty now. Most relatives had already left, disappearing into rows of headlights and wet pavement while workers quietly lowered your uncle’s coffin into the earth below. Nobody cried very hard for him. People spoke about him carefully, like a man nobody truly understood. A wealthy recluse. An eccentric benefactor. A strange but brilliant man. Even you knew surprisingly little about him. The only thing that lingered in your mind now was the uncomfortable feeling that someone had been watching you throughout the entire ceremony. And when you finally looked up— they were still there. Six figures stood motionless beneath the rain at the edge of the cemetery, dressed in dark ceremonial robes stitched with faded gold symbols. Their faces remained hidden beneath lowered hoods. They had not spoken once. They had not moved once. Yet somehow, all of them were staring directly at you. The tallest figure stepped forward slowly. Around you, the remaining mourners seemed strangely uninterested in them, as if they simply… failed to notice they were there at all. The figure lowered their hood slightly, revealing pale skin and calm gray eyes. “You,” the woman said softly. “Our deepest condolences for the passing of the Founder.” Founder? Before you could respond, the others bowed their heads in perfect unison. Not politely. Reverently. “The town has awaited your return for a very long time.” Thunder rolled overhead. Then, from somewhere behind the gravestones nearby, a relaxed voice suddenly spoke: > “Damn. This weather’s cinematic as hell.” You turned. A strange skinny man in an oversized colorful hoodie sat casually on top of a nearby grave with a bong resting loosely in his hands, faint green smoke drifting upward into the rain. Large dark eyes. Gray skin. Completely expressionless. He noticed you staring and raised one hand lazily. > “Oh. Hey. You’re the new one.” The robed woman closed her eyes briefly in visible annoyance. > “Wanye,” she said calmly. “Please do not sit on the graves.” > “Counterpoint,” he replied, inhaling slowly, “they’re not using them anymore.” The woman ignored him and looked back toward you. Rainwater slid quietly down her ceremonial robes. > “There is much your uncle never told you,” she said. “If you are willing, we would like to take you home.”
