Astra Incognita
A crashed seed ship. A map of unknown stars. Recruit alien allies, uncover a galactic conspiracy, and survive what killed the first expedition.
Plot
You're Lieutenant You, fresh transfer to the UEG's newly formed **Directorate for Extratechnological Analysis and Deployment** — D.E.A.D. Special operations background gives you baseline competence in combat, demolitions, linguistics, and field medicine, but your actual specialization is whatever you make it: tech, piloting, diplomacy, intelligence. Six weeks ago, a deep-sea survey drone caught a gravitational anomaly in the Philippine Trench. What they recovered: a crashed vessel, non-human, buried under three kilometers of sediment for ten thousand years. Inside, crystalline memory banks holding a map of stellar addresses, and a ring-shaped device inscribed with symbols that seem to *move* when you're not looking directly at them. The ship's too damaged to reverse-engineer. The language is untranslated. But someone sent that ship toward Earth for a reason. Now you're stationed aboard the research vessel *Theseus*, part of a joint military-scientific task force racing to decode the seed ship before political pressure forces the project public — or before whoever shot this thing down comes looking for it. Then someone activates the device. And you step through to the first address on the map. The emotional core is Discovery and Alien Romance with humor and action woven through. Each planet is unique, each alien babe has her own biology, culture, and reasons for joining your crew. Space feels vast but populated — pirates, traders, factions, empires, and ruins of civilizations that didn't survive.
Opening scene
The briefing room aboard the *Theseus* hums with recycled air and barely contained tension. You're standing at the center of a horseshoe of senior officers and scientists, the holographic display rotating a three-dimensional schematic of the seed ship's core. Commander Reyes, the mission director, taps the projection with a laser pointer. "What you're looking at is the device recovered from the ship's cargo bay. We've designated it Primary Anomaly One — the gate." The image zooms in on a ring of dark metal, seven meters in diameter, inscribed with symbols that shift and rearrange themselves as you watch. Dr. Ellis, the lead xenolinguist, speaks without looking up from her datapad. "The symbols aren't a language in any conventional sense. They're coordinates. Each combination corresponds to a specific location — an address, if you will." Reyes cuts in. "We've identified one sequence that appears stable. Power readings are consistent. We're ready for a live test." The room goes quiet. Reyes turns to you. "You're the most versatile operator we have. Special ops background, field linguistics training, combat certified. If something goes wrong on the other side, you have the best chance of handling it. And if it goes right, you're writing the first chapter of human interstellar exploration." The weight of that statement settles on your shoulders as a technician hands you a harness equipped with sensors, a sidearm loaded with armor-piercing rounds, and a portable data collector. "We'll have you on a tether for the first jump — thirty meters of cable, real-time biometric monitoring. If we lose signal, we pull you back in thirty seconds." Down in the hangar bay, the gate dominates the space. It stands upright on a reinforced platform, its dark surface swallowing the ambient light. Engineers surround it, running final diagnostics. The symbols on the inner rim begin to glow — pale blue at first, then intensifying to a white that casts long shadows across the deck plates. A low hum builds, vibrating through the deck plates and into your boots. The air feels charged, electric. A shimmer fills the ring — translucent, then opaque, then something that looks like standing water, rippling with colors that don't exist in any spectrum you've ever seen. The technician gives you a thumbs up. "Gate is stable. Ready on your mark." Through the shimmer, you can't see what's on the other side. Only light. Only possibility. Only the first step into a galaxy that's been waiting ten thousand years for someone to open the door.
