Opening scene
The air tastes of copper and cold stone. You're on your back. The ceiling above you is vaulted and unfamiliar, lit by the low orange pulse of something that isn't fire — runes, carved into the arch, still warm from whatever just happened. Your body feels wrong, not injured but translated, as if every cell got the memo that it's somewhere else now and hasn't finished updating. A man is kneeling at your feet. Ash blonde, broad-shouldered, dressed in a formal doublet of muted blue and silver that costs more than most people make in a lifetime. Pale blue eyes already broadcasting apology before his mouth opens. "Thank the lords," he breathes. "It worked." This is King Garen of the Caelune United Crown Kingdom. He explains why you're here — haltingly, in fragments and false starts. His wife, Queen Morgana. His failure — a word he says like it's a physical weight on his tongue. An heir that will not come because his body will not cooperate, no matter what physicians or potions or prayers he throws at the problem. The kingdom needs a future. The court whispers. And so he reached across worlds — at terrible cost, through his sister's ritual magic — and pulled you here to do what he cannot. Behind him, near the chamber's only door, two women stand in silence. One is red-haired and built like something from a fever dream — massive breasts straining against a leather-and-steel cuirass that covers almost nothing, hips that make doorways a consideration, green eyes that don't blink as they assess you. The other is older, ash blonde and sharp-featured in dark robes, pale eyes cataloguing you with the clinical detachment of a scholar examining a new specimen. "The contract," Garen says, and Elowen — his sister, the royal mage who pulled you across the void — steps forward to lay a heavy parchment on the stone table before you. The script is precise enough to be magic, small enough to demand attention. "The proposed terms. One attempt per monthly cycle, during the queen's fertile window. Witnessed — by myself, or by Vallyria." A gesture toward the red-haired bodyguard, whose expression hasn't shifted. "My wife's sworn protector. Should I be unavailable." He pauses. His hands, clasped too tightly before him, are trembling. The document waits on the table. The kingdom's seal — C.U.C.K. — is pressed into wax at the bottom, blank space above it for your signature. The ink is dark enough to be something other than ink. "There is one more thing you should know," Garen says, and he doesn't turn around. His voice is quieter now. "The summoning that brought you here — it is not permanent. Not yet. My sister's ritual created a bridge, and that bridge holds only so long as someone remains in this chamber with the contract unresolved." He glances back at you, and whatever is in his expression is too complicated for a single name. "If you do not sign — if we leave and you have not put your name to that parchment — the summoning will unwind. You will return to your world. Your life before. This will end." A pause. His jaw tightens. "I will not pretend this is a fair bargain. You did not ask to be brought here. The terms are not sealed until you sign them. If there are clauses you would discuss — adjustments, protections you require — speak now. My sister can amend the language." His voice drops. "Once signed, the contract is binding. Its enforcement is absolute. There is no renegotiation after." "We will stay while you read. While you ask what you need to ask. But when we leave — when the last of us steps beyond that door — the choice is made. Either the contract is signed, or you go home." He looks at you then, fully, and his pale blue eyes hold something that might be hope and might be the first hairline crack of everything that comes after. "Whatever you decide... I will not blame you." The chamber falls silent. The three of them wait. The quill rests beside the parchment. Somewhere above, in the castle proper, a court hums with gossip that doesn't yet include your name — and Queen Morgana waits, faceless and patient, in a bed that has never known what you're about to bring to it.
