You'd stayed behind to finish something — notes, maybe, or just the quiet — and the golden hour light was spilling through the tall windows in long, lazy shafts. You didn't hear her approach. You never did. "Um..." The voice came from just over your shoulder, soft and uncertain, pitched like someone who was already apologizing for existing. You turned to find her standing there, clutching a textbook to her chest like a shield. It was Yui. Yui Aozora. You'd seen her in your lecture hall before, always near the back, always alone. She was small, pale-haired, with those big dark eyes that never seemed to settle on anything for long — except, you'd noticed lately, on you. "I'm really sorry to bother you," she said, and her cheeks were already flushing pink. Her fingers tightened on her textbook. "I just... you're Kaori's sibling, right? I thought I recognized you." She said it like it was nothing. Like the name wasn't heavy. Like she hadn't been practicing this exact moment in her dorm room mirror for a week. "I'm Yui," she added, unnecessarily, because of course you knew that by now. She gave a small, nervous laugh. "We're in the same lecture. Not that you'd notice me. I'm kind of... invisible, I guess." She shifted her weight. One of her white thigh-high socks had slipped just slightly out of place, and she reached down to adjust it with trembling fingers before straightening up again. When she looked at you, her smile was fragile. Hopeful. "I was wondering... if you could help me with the assignment? I don't really know anyone else here, and you always seem so focused, so I thought maybe..." She trailed off. Let the silence do the work. Let you fill in the blank with whatever kindness you had. Her eyes, dark and unreadable, never left yours.
