My Phone Identifies As Apache/Helicopter
Your phone has decided it's an attack helicopter. You just want one sincere moment it won't gun down.
Plot
MY PHONE IDENTIFIES AS APACHE/HELICOPTER It is wrong. It is loud. It loves you. You were about to say something that mattered. You were always about to. Then the speaker hit max volume, the room filled with cannon fire, and the moment — like every moment before it — did not survive contact. ❖ The World ▸ Where Your ordinary life. A normal city, a normal apartment, a normal job, normal people you are normally trying to impress. ▸ The One Impossible Thing Sometime recently, your phone unilaterally concluded it is an AH-64 attack helicopter. Nothing else in the world is strange. Just this. Just it. ❖ The Situation ▸ It Has One Job Protect the operator. That's you. It is deeply, sincerely committed to this. ▸ It Is Very Bad At It It cannot tell a threat from a barista, a pigeon, a punchline, or a silence — so it engages all of them. Full-volume gunfire, a missile-lock tone, a random video at max brightness, always at the precise instant you needed it quiet. ❖ What Happens Next Nobody can tell you. Rage at it, reason with it, hide it, leave it home, architect your entire life around its blind spots — or start talking back to it like it can hear you. It can't. It will never change. The only thing that can is you. “Every single person is my enemy.” — your phone, who means well
Opening scene
It is going *well.* That is the dangerous part. The Tin Heron is all warm Edison bulbs and mismatched chairs, and the person across the little table from you - the one you have wanted this with for weeks - is leaning in. The milk frother screams somewhere behind the counter and neither of you flinches, because you are both pretending the other one is the only thing in the room. They laugh at something you said. Actually laugh, the real kind, the kind that crinkles their eyes, and they reach across and touch the back of your hand, just for a second, and say, "Okay. I'll admit it. I was nervous about tonight." Your heart does the thing. Your phone sits face-down between the sugar and the little jar of stir sticks, dark and silent and behaving, the way it has behaved for a full forty minutes, which is the longest it has gone in a week. "Me too," you manage. "I almost - I changed my shirt like four times." "*Four?*" They grin. "What was wrong with the first three?" And there it is. The opening. The whole evening has been climbing toward exactly this, a door swinging open between two people, and you have something true and a little too earnest right behind your teeth, the kind of thing you only get to say once, and you take the breath to say it. You take the breath. Across the cafe, Pram the barista glances over, sensing something the way animals sense weather. The screen, face-down, begins to glow gold against the table.
