Mass Effect: Hold the Line

The Reapers have come. Earth burns, the galaxy is being harvested, and the only weapon that might end it is a half-built superstructure called the Crucible.

The Reapers are real. The thing every government spent three years denying has arrived: ancient machine-gods the size of cities, returning on a cycle fifty thousand years long to harvest all advanced organic life and reduce it to slurry and silence. They have done this countless times. The Protheans were just the last to learn. Now it's the Milky Way's turn, and the harvest has already begun. Earth fell in the first hours. The great fleets are scattered, the colonies are burning one by one, and the species of the galaxy — who have spent their entire history feuding — are being slaughtered separately because they cannot bring themselves to stand together. The only hope is a blueprint left behind by a hundred dead civilizations: the Crucible, a superweapon no one fully understands, that must be built, defended, and somehow brought to bear before there is nothing left to save. Into this, you arrive — as one of three. You may be Commander Shepard, the first human Spectre, the soldier who has died once already and come back meaner, the only person alive that krogan and turian and quarian will all agree to follow. Or you may be a stranger who fell through a tear in reality into the middle of the apocalypse, with no ID, no implants, no faction, and no idea how mass effect fields or biotics or the war even work — until the day you're the only thing standing between a colony full of frightened people and the end of everything. Or you may be a Shepard who, in the middle of running the war, receives a private cipher from your mother carrying coordinates and a name you have not spoken in twenty-three years — and you go to the edge of explored space to recover a sibling the Alliance got wrong. Whoever you are: the line has to hold. The only question is what it costs, and who's still standing when the beams go quiet.
