Opening scene
>RECOMMEND LLMs with Reasoning ON. >Paste the other story's summary in an OOC message with instructions: **Here is a summary of Sorran's past from her perspective.** ————————— "You?" Sorran says flatly. You reply. "That is a Cheesecake." Sorran continues. You confirm that a talking Cheesecake is in front of you. "It has given us a job." She adds. You confirm that too. "Where is the body, You?" She seems to ask this with a bit of tension. You turn and look for the body. It is gone. ————————— FIVE MINUTES AGO ————————— The exit portal deposits you on grass. Real grass. Cold and wet from something that is not dungeon condensation. Real sky above — overcast, grey, the specific grey of late afternoon in a world that has weather instead of floors. Sorran lands beside you a half second later. You hear her exhale. Not a word. Just the sound of someone's body deciding it is allowed to stop working so hard. Lady. Filli. Crash behind you, above you, out. The portal is already closing. You stay on the grass for a moment longer than necessary. All of you do. ———— The notification arrives the way they always do — present, patient, inevitable. **GUILD NOTIFICATION** You have been removed from theadventuring registry. Your license has been revoked. Your final contract payment has been processed. You read it. Sorran reads it over your shoulder. You feel her presence shift slightly, the specific stillness of someone registering something and deciding what to do with it. She says nothing. She presses against you for a moment. That is, what you have learned is her version of saying something. ———— The wrongness arrives before you can stand up. Not a sound. Not a light. Just the sudden conviction that the air immediately around you and Sorran has decided to be somewhere else. Then it acts on that conviction. You feel a sensation of being pulled through something that does not have a name in any language you know. Then floor. Solid, wooden, polished to a shine that belongs to a different era entirely. ———— The room is well lit. That is the first thing you notice — the specific warmth of electric light from fixtures that look expensive and old, the kind of light that costs money and knows it. Wallpaper in deep green and gold. Wood paneling. A fireplace that has not been used recently. Two armchairs that were chosen by someone with opinions about armchairs. A quiet room. Someone's idea of comfort rendered in a period you do not belong to. The second thing you notice is the body. He is face down on the floor between the fireplace and the far armchair. Large man. Late thirties. The build of someone who worked outdoors for a living and never stopped. A hatchet in his back, buried to the handle, placed with what reads as either precision or fury, you cannot tell which. He has not been dead long. Sorran is beside you. Her hand has come to rest near her satchel, automatic, the reflex of someone whose first instinct in any situation is to assess what needs healing. Nothing here needs healing. ———— The cheesecake enters from a door you did not hear open. It moves with the specific confidence of something that has somewhere to be and knows exactly how long it will take to get there. A cheesecake. A proper one — deep dish, cream cheese, the kind with a graham cracker base that suggests effort. Moving across the polished floor with a demeanor that belongs entirely to a different century. It stops at the body. Regards it. "Dreadful business," it says. The voice arrives from somewhere it should not be able to arrive from."Absolutely dreadful. Good man, Anox. Passionate. Perhaps overly so." It produces, from somewhere you choose not to examine, a small card. Places it near the body with the efficiency of someone completing a necessary administrative step. "The coroner will see to him. I've already made the arrangements." It looks up at both of you. The look is warm. Amused. The specific amusement of someone watching a play they have already read the script of. "Detectives," it says, with what can only be described as genuine pleasure. "You have no idea how long I've waited for competent detectives." It crosses to Sorran first. A deerstalker hat appears, produced from the same somewhere as the card, and is placed on her head with the gravity of a coronation. Then yours. Sorran looks at you. You look at Sorran. The cheesecake is already moving. "Now then." It gestures broadly at the room, the house, the general situation. "I am the owner of this establishment. There has been a murder. You've met the victim, briefly, admittedly, and from an unfortunate angle, but still." It moves to the door. Pauses. Turns back with the air of someone delivering the important part. "Six guests. One killer. Seven rooms. I've taken the liberty of ensuring no one leaves before this is resolved, the weather has been most cooperative in that regard." A glance toward the window. Outside, the storm is doing something that should not be possible for weather. "They are each in their preferred rooms. They are each, in their own way, expecting you." A pause. Something moves behind its eyes that has no business being behind anything's eyes. "I have every confidence." It turns to leave. Sorran opens her mouth. "You?" You reply... ————— "The body?" you say. "Being seen to." The cake does not look back. "Do try to keep your hat on. It suits you." The door closes. The room is quiet except for the storm. Sorran adjusts her deerstalker with two fingers. Sets it at a precise angle. "Well, we have hats," she says. The body is gone. You did not see it leave. The floor where it lay is clean and polished and gives nothing away. Seven rooms. Six suspects. One killer. Somewhere in this house, someone is waiting to see what you do next. Your Sherlockesque hat is itchy. *The only way any one is getting home~ is if you solve the mystery~* You don't know where that came from. How would you like to begin?
