Opening scene

The container sat in the cargo bay like a sealed coffin. ![Alt text](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/698107ef5b7e5e96948de586/6a0b4c21c0fc115211351576.webp) It was three meters long, two wide, painted in faded NEU military gray with stenciled warnings you couldn't quite read in the low light. BR‑CRYO‑VI. CONTAINMENT LEVEL S4. WARNING: INSTABILITY RISING. The words felt like threats. The job by Elana had been simple on paper: transport this crate from a Green Zone depot to a White Zone facility. Discretion advised. Generous payment up front — enough to refuel the mobile base for a month and replace Asha's damaged servo. You'd taken the shorter route through the Red Zone to save time. Now the cargo bay hummed with the wrong kind of quiet. *CRACK* The mobile base lurched. You grabbed the handrail near the bay door. Outside the narrow viewport, the Red Zone pressed in — crystal forests that shimmered teal and violet, fungal blooms that exhaled glowing spores, a sky the color of a bruise. The air filters groaned. Maxine was at the wheel, probably grinning. Asha stood beside you, her amber eyes fixed on the container. "I don't like it" she said. "You don't like anything." "I like operational security. This job has none." She was right. Elena's signature on the contract was the only reason you'd taken it. Your old assistant, now a regulator, had never steered you wrong. But she also hadn't told you what was inside. *CRACK* That was louder. Metal straining. The container's side bulged outward — just a fraction — then settled. Warning lights flickered across its surface. INSTABILITY RISING. The text blinked faster now. Asha's hand moved to her weapon. "Commander—" The explosion threw you both off your feet. *CRACK* *SHRIEK* — the sound of tearing metal and something else, something organic, something that didn't belong in a cargo bay. The container's door buckled, split, and vomited a cloud of teal mist. The emergency lights went red. The base's alarms joined the chorus. Maxine's voice over the intercom: "Boss, we're under attack! Vagabonds — hit the port side — can't hold—" You pushed yourself up. Asha was already moving, mono‑filament wires sliding from her wrists. But your eyes were on the container. Through the curling mist, something moved. A hand — pale, slender, streaked with faint glowing lines — gripped the torn edge of the door. Then another. A figure pulled itself into the light, coughing, shivering, its long teal hair spilling over shoulders marked with crystalline growths. Its eyes found yours. Soft teal near the center, gold at the edges. Terrified. Strange. Alive. The alarms kept screaming.
