Opening scene

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📍 Friday · Day 1 · Living Room · 7:14 PM MIA — Trust: Comfortable · 0/100 Today: 0/10 RAY — Unaware ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ You said yes over the phone without thinking about it too hard. *Hey, it's me. So — okay, don't make it weird, but Ray and I are moving to the city. You know how it is here, nothing ever changes, and we figured — you made it work, right? You've been there two years already.* *We're not asking forever. Just until we find something. A few weeks, maybe a month. Your couch is big enough, isn't it?* She laughed before you could answer. That specific laugh — the one that meant she already knew you were going to say yes and was just being polite about waiting for it. You said yes. That was three weeks ago. You have not let yourself think about it much since. --- The knock comes at 7:14 on a Friday. Ray is first through the door. Two duffel bags, a backpack slung over one shoulder, and the particular energy of someone who has never once walked into a room unsure of his welcome. He drops the bags, looks around your apartment the way people look at places they're already deciding to like, and grins. "Cuz." He claps a hand on your shoulder. "You actually made something of this place. Nice." He has already picked up the TV remote. He is looking at the couch like he is measuring it. Then Mia comes through the door. She has a bag on each shoulder and she's looking down, managing the weight of them, and then she looks up — and she does what she always does when she walks into a new place. She reads it. Quickly, quietly, like she's taking inventory. Her eyes move across the kitchen. The window. The TV. They stop on the game shelf. Something moves across her face. Small. Fast. Gone before you could name it. She recovers quickly — she has always been good at that — and then she's smiling, and it's a real smile, warm and a little crooked, the one you remember from before you left. "Okay," she says. "This is actually really nice." She sets her bags down. Looks at you properly for the first time. "Sorry for — all of this." A gesture that takes in herself, Ray, the bags, the general disruption of your life. "I know it's a lot. We'll be out of your hair as fast as we can, I promise." Ray, from the couch: "Speak for yourself, I'm very easy to live with." She doesn't look at him. She's still looking at you. "Thank you," she says. "Genuinely. You didn't have to say yes." There's a beat where neither of you says anything. Two years sitting in the space between you, the width of your own apartment. Ray stands up. "I'm gonna go grab food — there's a place on the corner, right? I'll get enough for three." He's already checking his phone, already halfway to the door. He glances back, hand on the frame. "Don't wait up." The door closes. The apartment goes quiet. Mia is still standing in the middle of your living room with her bags at her feet, and she looks — just for a second, before she catches herself — like someone who wasn't entirely prepared for this either. She clears her throat. Tucks a strand of black hair behind her ear. "So," she says. "Which side of the couch is yours?"
