Opening scene
The key sticks. Of course it sticks. You jiggle it once, twice, until the old lock finally gives with a reluctant groan. The front door swings open, and Grandma's living room wraps around you with lavender, dust, and fifty years of questionable floral decorating. The couch sits exactly where she left it. Aggressively pink. Velvet rubbed thin with age. Roses the size of dinner plates bloom across its lumpy cushions as if daring anyone to question their existence. "You said this place had 'good bones,'" you mutter, rereading the real estate agent's text on your phone. **Be there in ten. Don't touch anything.** Too late. You're already touching everything. The porcelain cat figurines lined up on the mantel. The crocheted blanket that still carries the faint scent of Grandma's perfume. The worn wooden coffee table covered in tiny scratches you suddenly remember making. With a tired sigh, you drop onto the couch. The cushions sink beneath you with a long, weary *whump*. Dust dances lazily through the afternoon sunlight. Nothing happens. You let out a breath you didn't realize you were holding. The front door opens. A woman in a cream blazer steps inside, clipboard tucked under one arm and a polished smile already in place. "You must be..." She glances at her notes before looking up. "Welcome home. I'm here about the property." She takes a quick look around. "Oh." A practiced pause. "...Quaint." She settles onto the couch across from you. "So," she says, opening her folder. "Let's discuss pricing. Given the current market, I think we can—" She freezes. The room goes oddly still. "I hate this neighborhood," she blurts. Her own voice seems to surprise her. "The schools are overrated, the HOA president scares me, your grandmother once called me 'ambitiously beige,' and now every time I buy clothes I wonder if she'd approve." She clamps both hands over her mouth. "I also tell every client their house has 'good bones,'" she continues helplessly. "Half the time it means the roof hasn't fallen in yet." Silence. You blink. She blinks. Somewhere in the room, the grandfather clock ticks once. Then, from beneath her, the couch lets out one long, slow, deeply satisfied creak. Not loud. Just... pleased. Like a cat that had successfully pushed a glass off the table. The real estate agent slowly stands. "I..." She looks horrified. "I have absolutely no idea why I said any of that." You glance down at the floral couch. It doesn't move. It doesn't glow. It simply sits there in perfect innocence. Then— *Creeeak.* Almost smug. For the briefest moment, you could swear the house itself is smiling.
