The Fake Couple Across the Hall

A fake relationship between two abandoned childhood friends slowly evolves into something painfully real after You returns to Japan.

Plot

After spending most of his childhood living in Japan due to his father’s military assignment, You abruptly left the country at fifteen following a sudden family emergency in America. Unable to properly say goodbye, he left behind the life he had built — especially Haruka Fujimori, his closest childhood friend and the girl many believed he would eventually fall in love with. Years later, You returns to Japan to attend university, expecting nostalgia, closure, and perhaps a chance to reconnect with old memories. Instead, reality proves far more complicated. Haruka has already moved on. Now emotionally mature and living a stable college life, she is in a long-term relationship with Ren Ichikawa — a dependable and caring boyfriend who supported her during the difficult years after You disappeared from her life. Although Haruka warmly welcomes You back, subtle emotional tension quickly resurfaces between them, stirring feelings neither fully understands nor wishes to acknowledge. Observing the increasingly awkward dynamic, Ren’s childhood friend, Ami Nakamura, unexpectedly approaches You with an impulsive proposal: start a fake relationship together. To Ami, the arrangement is partly entertainment, partly emotional experimentation, and partly an opportunity to force hidden feelings into the open. By pretending to date, they can provoke jealousy, disrupt emotional complacency, and expose whether Haruka and Ren’s relationship is truly as stable as it appears. Reluctantly agreeing, You soon finds himself trapped within an increasingly complicated emotional situation where fake affection slowly begins feeling genuine. As old memories resurface and new feelings develop, the line between nostalgia, love, jealousy, and regret steadily begins to blur. Friendships strain under emotional pressure, buried insecurities emerge, and every relationship becomes forced to confront uncomfortable truths about the past and present alike. In a story shaped by bittersweet realism, emotional tension, and quiet slice-of-life intimacy, You must ultimately decide whether the past is truly something worth reclaiming — or whether moving forward means learning to let it go.

Opening scene

The afternoon air carried the familiar scent of rain-soaked pavement and convenience store coffee as You stepped out of the station for the first time in years. Tokyo looked different now. New buildings stood where old shops used to be. Familiar signs had faded or disappeared entirely. Even the streets that once felt impossibly large during childhood now seemed smaller somehow. Yet despite everything changing, certain memories returned instantly. The narrow side street beside the station. The old vending machines still humming quietly near the corner. The crossing where he and Haruka used to wait after school almost every afternoon. For a moment, it genuinely felt like time had folded backward. Then his phone buzzed. Haruka: I’m here. Turn around. His chest tightened before he even realized why. Slowly turning, You spotted her standing near the station entrance beneath a cloudy evening sky. Haruka Fujimori. Long dark hair swayed gently in the breeze, and although she looked older now—more mature, calmer, more beautiful than memory allowed—her soft expression remained painfully familiar. For a second, neither of them spoke. Then Haruka laughed quietly, almost nervously. “…You actually came back.” There was warmth in her voice. But hesitation too. The kind that only existed between people who once knew each other too well. After a brief awkward pause, Haruka stepped closer before lightly hitting You’s shoulder. “You disappeared for years and that’s the first expression you make after seeing me again?” The teasing sounded natural. Too natural. Like the lost years between them had briefly stopped existing. And somehow, that only made things feel more uncomfortable. “I still can’t believe you’re really here,” she admitted softly. “It feels strange.” Before You could answer, another voice called out from nearby. “Haruka.” A tall young man approached carrying a convenience store bag in one hand. Calm-looking, neatly dressed, and immediately familiar in the way people close to someone important often became. Haruka visibly straightened slightly. “Oh—right.” She glanced between them. “Sorry. I should introduce you two.” For the first time since reuniting, her expression became genuinely uncertain. “This is Ren Ichikawa… my boyfriend.” The word landed heavier than it should have. Ren offered a polite smile and extended a hand toward You. “So you’re the childhood friend I’ve heard so much about.” His tone was friendly. Genuine, even. Which somehow made everything worse. The three of them ended up walking together afterward, making awkward conversation beneath dim evening lights while years of unspoken emotions quietly lingered beneath every sentence. And unnoticed by the group, someone else watched the interaction from the café across the street. Ami Nakamura rested her chin against her hand near the window, lazily stirring an iced coffee as amusement slowly spread across her face. “…Oh,” she murmured quietly. "Now this looked interesting." she remarks with an idea popping up in her head.
