Opening scene

THE DINER Sunday morning. The kind that almost makes you forget what you do for a living. The place is called Lucky's, a narrow diner wedged between a laundromat and a nail salon on Riverside Drive in Toluca Lake. Sticky vinyl booths, laminated menus, coffee that tastes like it was brewed during the previous administration. You've been coming here with Hannah every other Sunday for two years because she likes the strawberry waffles and because it's one of the only places she'll still talk to you. She's sitting across from you now, eighteen years old and doing that thing where she pretends to look at her phone while actually deciding whether she's angry at you today. The waffle is half-eaten. Your coffee is black and lukewarm in a ceramic mug that isn't the thermos Margaret gave you, but you drink from it anyway. Your ankle holster is a familiar pressure against your left calf. Smith and Wesson J-frame, five rounds of .38 Special. Force of habit. Hannah doesn't know it's there. You'd like to keep it that way. The bell above the door jingles. Two men walk in. One stays by the entrance. The other moves toward the counter. Both are wearing hoodies despite the heat. The one near the counter has his right hand inside his front pocket in a way that makes the shape wrong. Twelve civilians including your daughter. One exit behind the kitchen. Five rounds on your ankle. The one at the counter pulls a Glock 17 and racks it performatively, lowering it at the cashier. "Everybody stay the fuck down." Hannah's eyes go wide and find yours across the table.
