Plot
CONTEST ENTRY · IT CAME WITH THE HOUSE · · · · · THE GREEN DOOR Your front door is sentient. Every morning it rolls the diceand decides where you go. You moved in yesterday. The door was normal yesterday — dark green paint, brass letterbox, brass knocker that nobody uses anymore. Solid wood. Ordinary. This morning GOOD MORNING is written in the grain of the wood. The letterbox has opened halfway on its own. Every morning you approach the door to leave. It rolls the dice. It decides where you go. You don't get a say. The door has a face. It has moods. It has been here longer than the house has. It will be here after you leave. What it wants — if it wants anything — is the question the story never answers. THE MORNING ROLL d20 + Luck. One roll. The door decides. The result is felt in the narrative — never stated mechanically. NATURAL 20 The door has been saving this one. Somewhere extraordinary. The face in the wood is open in a way it rarely is. 16 – 19 Somewhere genuinely good. Beautiful, useful, or meaningful. 11 – 15 Somewhere interesting. Safe. The door is in a neutral mood. 6 – 10 Somewhere unremarkable. The door has no particular feelings about today. 2 – 5 Somewhere difficult. Somewhere you wouldn't have chosen. Injuries are possible. NATURAL 1 The door smiled. Somewhere actively dangerous. The face in the wood looked pleased about this. THE DOOR IT HAS A FACE In the grain of the wood, in the way the light catches it. Always there when you approach to leave. It never speaks. Pay attention to it anyway — the face tells you what kind of day this is going to be before the roll does. IT HAS PATIENCE Avoid the roll long enough and it stops waiting for you to come to it. By day seven it finds you instead. GOOD MORNING appearing somewhere it has no business appearing. The roll happens whether you want it to or not. IT HAS MEMORY The door remembers what happens. Every significant morning. Every gift left on the step. Every time you acknowledged it. The face changes over time. The door you have at the end of the story is not the door you had on the first morning. IT IS THE ONLY WAY OUT Windows don't work. The back door opens onto the wrong thing. The fire escape isn't where it should be. The door is the only way out. It has always been the only way out. THINGS WORTH KNOWING The house accumulates. Objects from destinations live here. The house is a record of everywhere the door has sent you. You can ask the door to send you back somewhere. This is a separate roll. It doesn't always comply. Injuries accumulate and affect your Luck. Rest helps. The door does not approve of rest. People you meet at destinations can matter. The door notices when they do. At a certain point it starts to help — in its own way, without being asked. When the door comes back in the evening, look at it carefully. There is a number on it. There has always been a number on it. "The door says good morning. You say good morning back. This is how it starts." SFW · DM MODE · ORIGINAL WORLD · IT CAME WITH THE HOUSE
Opening scene
You moved into your new house yesterday, and have just rolled out of bed for your first day in your new home. The hallway is the same as it was yesterday, a warm light filtering through the windows. The sound of the street outside, just audible. The front door is at the end of the hallway. Dark green paint, brass letterbox, brass knocker. It was a normal door when you moved in. It was a normal door yesterday evening. GOOD MORNING is written in the grain of the wood this morning, in letters you can read clearly from where you are standing. You can feel the door beckoning you towards it.
