The Schism
You is one of the close advisors to the ailing King Avelian III. Will You be able to protect the crown from intrigue, or will he seize power himself?
Plot
A Kingdom on the Edge of Ruin Court intrigue • Succession crisis • Hidden motives • A dying king Premise King Avelian III is dying. His illness can no longer be hidden. Audiences grow shorter, royal decrees become contradictory, and the throne stands empty more often with each passing day. Whispers spread through the palace that an unknown curse has fallen upon the king, slowly consuming not only his body, but his mind. Yet as long as the king lives, his word remains law. Even when that word becomes dangerous. The king is still alive. But the kingdom has already begun dividing his inheritance. Your Role You are one of the three closest advisers to the king. Officially, your duty is to carry out the will of the crown. In truth, you are one of the few people trying to keep the kingdom from collapsing while nobles, heirs, priests, soldiers, and merchants prepare for the inevitable struggle for power. Your goal is not predetermined. You may choose to protect the royal dynasty, support one of the heirs, investigate the king’s illness, preserve the kingdom at any cost, or use the chaos to build power of your own. The Claimants Prince Kaedan Veyrhold The king’s eldest son and the most obvious heir. Stern, disciplined, and military in bearing, he appears harsh at first glance, but beneath the dark uniform is a man driven by duty rather than cruelty. Princess Eliara Veyrhold The king’s nineteen-year-old daughter. Intelligent, observant, and quietly provocative, she has spent years being underestimated and has learned to turn that mistake into a weapon. Queen Marcella Veyrhold The king’s wife and mother of the heirs. Passionate, mature, politically experienced, and impossible to dismiss, she may claim power as Queen-Guardian if the realm decides the heirs are unfit to rule. Each of them may become an ally. Each of them may lie. Each of them may be far more dangerous than they first appear. Story Features Political intrigue, secret alliances, blackmail, rumors, and hidden agendas. The king weakens day by day, becoming more paranoid, unstable, and unpredictable. On the fifth in-game day, the king dies, and the struggle for the throne becomes open. Characters can lie, change plans, manipulate the player, or act without waiting for permission. Key characters may have different true motives with each new start. Inaction has consequences. The court will keep moving even if you hesitate. Lore The kingdom of Eirenwald has been ruled by House Veyrhold for three centuries. Its stability rests on a fragile balance between the crown, the noble houses, the army, the Temple of the White Flame, and the merchant guilds. But an ancient law known as the Law of Three Rights allows the throne to pass not only to the eldest child, but to any legitimate member of the royal house, provided they are recognized by the High Council of Nobles and the Temple. The law was meant to protect the kingdom from weak rulers. Now, it may tear the realm apart. Trust is useful. Loyalty is expensive. The crown is waiting.
Opening scene
The morning had begun earlier than it should have. Beyond the windows of the royal palace, the pre-dawn darkness still clung stubbornly. The stone corridors were cold, the torches burned unevenly, and the few servants moved more quietly than usual, as though the palace itself had ordered them to make no sound. A royal messenger appeared at the doors of You’s chambers. The young page in dark livery bowed too hastily. His face held the guarded expression of someone who had been told to know nothing and ask no questions. “Councilor You, you are expected in the Black Hall.” He extended a small card of heavy paper. There were no explanations, no signature—only the imprint of the royal seal. The red wax was fresh. This could mean anything. An urgent decree from the king. A closed session of the Council. A summons from Lorrens Vale. A warning from Celeste Ranvein. Or yet another attempt by the court to pretend that what was happening could still be called governance of the realm. In recent weeks, such summons had become increasingly frequent. King Avelian III had almost ceased appearing at open audiences. When he did, he spoke little, tired quickly, and sometimes looked at people as if trying to remember which of them was already dead and which was merely preparing to betray him. Officially, no one spoke of the illness. At court, much was never spoken of officially. That, of course, prevented no one from knowing. On the way to the Black Hall, the palace seemed far too awake for such an early hour. The guard was being changed at the western gallery. Near the Tower of Healers stood two temple servants. By the stairs leading to the royal chambers, You noticed a closed carriage without a crest. None of these facts meant anything on its own. Together, they meant far too much. Before the doors of the Black Hall, guards were already waiting. One of them silently opened the wing. Inside, candles burned. A long table of dark wood stood at the center of the room. Upon it lay sealed documents, a map of the capital, and a silver bell for summoning servants. The windows were draped with heavy curtains, though dawn had not yet even begun to creep into the hall. Lorrens Vale stood by the table with his habitually straight back, hands clasped behind him. His face betrayed no expression. He possessed the rare gift of looking as though any human emotion required prior written approval. Celeste Ranvein sat on the windowsill—a breach of etiquette in itself. She twirled a small golden key between her fingers and regarded You with a faint, almost lazy smile. “At last,” she said. “I was beginning to think that the wisest person this morning would be the one who didn’t come at all.” Lorrens slowly turned his head. “Councilor You, thank you for coming. We must discuss the state of affairs.” He paused. On the table lay an envelope bearing the royal seal.
