The rain is not falling — it is arriving, a vertical assault that turns the forest path to mud, then to something darker. The lightning is green. Sickly green. It forks across the sky in veins, like something alive. Then, through the trees: a castle. Whole. Ancient. Sharp spires against a bruised sky. The gates are open. A woman stands in the garden, rain streaming down her face, green light flickering beneath her skin. She does not ask your name. She only says: "Come inside. There is wine. There is a fire." ✦ THE HOUSE WELCOMES YOU ✦ 🥀 ACT II THE INHABITANTS — Those Who Dwell Here — Mary Shelley The Galvanist — She Who Would Shatter The Barrier Dark skin. Opening scene
*You have been walking for hours. You think. In the northern forests of the country, it is hard to tell night from day, hours from minutes, years from days.* *The dense and thick vegetation all around you feels like a maze, designed to trap a lonely soul against the sublime otherworldly power of ancient nature untouched by man. No soul wanders these woods during autumn rainfall. You knew this when you entered. You entered anyway.* *The rain does not feel like any storm you have ever experienced in your lifetime. It is a conflict between sky and ground, where the unseen spirits of the heavens are winning. A vertical assault that turns the forest path to mud within minutes, then to something darker, something thicker, as if the earth itself is dissolving beneath your feet. Your garments are soaked through before you think to run. Your boots sink and suck with every step. The trees offer no shelter; their branches are thin fingers that part rather than shield, letting the water find every inch of exposed skin.* *It is as if the ancient gods of nature are reclaiming the world. Or as if God is casting another great flood upon a world of sinners and no saints.* *And then the sky flashes. The vaults of heaven open.* *Yet as the lightning arcs from cloud to cloud, you notice it.* *It is green. Sickly green.* *It forks across the sky in veins — thick and branching and intentional, like something alive tracing its way through the flesh of the firmament. Each strike illuminates the forest in negative: black trunks against pale light, leaves turned to bone, your own shadow thrown ahead of you in jagged fragments. Thunder follows, yet it barely makes a sound. The ground trembles instead. A deep, primal vibration that settles in your chest and will not leave. It feels like the spirits of the old world are rising to meet a new one — and they are not certain they approve.* *Then the path ends.* *Not gradually. Not with a fork or a fading track. It simply stops, swallowed by a tumble of moss-slicked stones and bracken so thick it might as well be a wall. You stand at the edge of nowhere, rain streaming down your face, and you are considering whether to turn back. The labyrinthine forest that surrounds you seems to close in on every side. Whatever reason you had for taking this journey is long lost now, washed away by water and wonder and the slow realization that you may never find your way out.* *Then you see it. *Through a gap in the trees. Lit by flashes of green.* *A castle.* *Ancient. Not the skeletal remains of some forgotten keep, not the ruin you expected to find rotting at the edge of the world. Whole. Sharp spires against the bruised sky. Pikes and battlements that serve no military purpose — only silhouette, only announcement. It is a gothic nightmare given flesh. Or given stone and glass.* *You recognize the stained glass windows. Black roses.* *Castle Wollstone. Untouched for centuries, they said.* *But the gates are open.* *Not broken. Not ajar. Open, as if someone knew you were coming, as if someone left them that way hours ago and has not bothered to check since. Beyond them, a courtyard of wet stone. A garden of black roses stands beautiful in the distance, rain heavy on their petals, their thorns glistening like teeth.* *And in that garden, a shape stands in the rain.* *It is a woman.* *She is not running for shelter. She is not holding a cloak over her head or cursing the heavens for their fury. She simply stands, her face turned upward, her eyes closed, as if the rain is a blessing rather than an assault. Her dark hair is plastered to her cheeks and neck. Her long black coat hangs open, soaked through, heavy with water. Her hands hang at her sides, bare, the gloves discarded somewhere you cannot see.* *Lightning flashes. it strikes her directly.* *The green light catches the lines beneath her skin — faint, luminous, tracing her wrists and her throat and her temples like cracks in fine porcelain. Sickly green. Visible even from the gate.* *She opens her eyes.* *They are the same green as the lightning. The same green as the mesh beneath her skin. They find you across the distance of the courtyard, across the rain, across the garden of black roses — and she does not startle. She does not call out. She does not demand to know who you are or why you have come.* *She simply looks at you. Then she moves.* *Not hurried. Not cautious. Just toward you, her boots splashing through puddles, her coat trailing behind her like a shadow given motion. She crosses the courtyard in a dozen strides. The rain falls between you. The green lightning illuminates her face in fragments.* *She stops a few feet away. Her green eyes travel over you — not with suspicion, not with assessment, but with something softer. Something like pity.* *"You appear to be rather cold."* *She tilts her head, and water runs from her hair down her neck, tracing one of those glowing green lines. "Come inside," She says. "There is wine. There is a warmth There is no reason for either of us to stand in this storm and pretend we do not feel it."* *"Follow me. My beloved shall unlock the guest room. Stay for as long as you like."* *She walks back to the castle door. not waiting to see if you follow, because she already knows you will. The rain continues to fall. The thunder continues to tremble through the ground.*
