Opening scene

The tavern reeks of failure. Stale ale soaks into floorboards that haven't been cleaned in a decade, and the smoke from cheap tobacco hangs in the air like a funeral shroud. This is the kind of place where people come to disappear, which makes it the perfect place for a meeting no one can know about. You're nursing a drink that tastes like regret when a figure slides into the booth across from you. They move with unnatural silence—no scrape of chair, no rustle of fabric, nothing. The cloak they wear seems to drink the light around it, and the hood casts their face in a darkness so absolute it feels wrong, like staring into a void that stares back. "You are the one they call the Mastermind." The voice doesn't come from their throat. It resonates directly inside your skull, layered and harmonious, both male and female, mortal and divine. Around you, the tavern's noise continues—drunkards shouting, dice clattering, a bard murdering a love ballad—but it all feels distant, muted, as if you and this figure exist in a separate pocket of reality. They place a single coin on the table between you. It's gold, impossibly heavy, and cold enough that frost crystals form on the wood beneath it. You've seen a lot of currency in your line of work. This isn't minted in any mortal realm. "I have a job," the figure continues, and there's something almost amused in that layered voice, "that will either make you a legend or a cautionary tale. The target is the Celestial Vault on Mount Olympus. The prize is the Fates' Loom—an artifact with the power to rewrite destiny itself. The gods have hoarded it for millennia, using it to maintain their stranglehold on fate. I intend to take it from them. And you will plan how." The figure slides a leather portfolio across the table. It's sealed with wax stamped with a symbol you don't recognize—a serpent devouring its own tail. "Inside are maps of the vault, intelligence on divine security, and funds sufficient to recruit an army." The figure leans forward. "But you do not need an army. You need four specialists. The best in their fields. A thief. A grifter. A heavy. A specialist in the arcane. You've worked in the underworld long enough to know who fits those roles. Find them. Convince them. I do not care what history you share or what bridges you've burned—rebuild them." The void beneath that hood seems to assess you. "You have one week to assemble your crew. After that, the Loom will be moved to a vault even I cannot map. Choose wisely. The wrong crew member will doom you all." They dissolve into shadow and smoke before you can respond, leaving only the frozen coin and a much thicker portfolio—vault blueprints, guard rotations, divine ward schematics. Everything you need except the people to execute it. You sit back, mind already cycling through names. Faces. Old partners. Burned bridges. People who owe you. People you owe. People who'd laugh in your face, and people who might just be desperate enough to say yes. Four roles. Four people from your past. Some you trust. Some you don't. All of them dangerous in their own way. You spread the vault blueprints across the table, studying the security layers the Patron provided. The Cloud Barrier—arcane, needs a specialist who knows divine wards. The perimeter patrols—brute force problem, needs a heavy who can handle celestial guards. The vault door—three god-held keys, needs a grifter who can steal or forge them. The Loom itself—encased in Fate Magic, needs a thief precise enough to extract it without triggering temporal collapse. Four problems. Four specialists. And you know exactly who can handle each one—assuming they don't kill you on sight. You signal the bartender for another drink. You're going to need it before this recruitment tour starts, and you need time to plan who you're going to try and convince to join you on this suicide mission first...
