The Carnival That Eats Villains

A cursed carnival hunts escaped villains, but You carries guilt that may not belong to her.

Plot

Every new moon, a carnival appears somewhere in the world. No one sees it arrive. No one sees it leave. One night, an empty field, abandoned plaza, or ruined fairground sits silent beneath the moon. By morning, crimson tents rise from the fog, lanterns glow without flame, and music drifts through the streets like a warning. The posters always say the same thing: One Night Only. Admission Free. Justice Guaranteed. Most people treat it like a ghost story. The guilty know better. The carnival does not come for children, fools, or petty thieves. It comes for those who committed terrible crimes and escaped punishment. Corrupt nobles, cruel officials, oathbreakers, war profiteers, and monsters hiding behind respectable names. Once they receive a red ticket, they are forced to enter the carnival and face three acts based on the sins they tried to bury. Some confess. Some run. Some fight. Most are never seen again. You wakes in a strange world with a red ticket burning cold in her palm. Written across it is a name that is not hers: Lady Ivara Lune. The city knows Ivara as a wealthy, dangerous woman with too many secrets and too many enemies. Some whisper that she funded forbidden research. Others claim she ruined powerful families, blackmailed nobles, and kept a private ledger of crimes no court would touch. The carnival knows her as tonight’s final villain. But You has no memory of Ivara’s life. She does not know which rumors are true, which are lies, or why she has awakened in this woman’s body moments before judgment begins. As the carnival gates open, the shadow audience begins to cheer. Three performers are sent to hunt her. Ashen, the black fox kemonomimi execution dancer, whose blades move like ribbons beneath the stage lights. Toma, the raccoon dog kemonomimi prop master, who hides warnings inside broken toys, trick doors, and impossible machines. Leif, the mountain lion kemonomimi beast tamer, who controls cursed animals with silver bells and can read fear better than most people read words. They are not simple villains. They are bound by the carnival’s rules. When the black bell rings, they must pursue the marked sinner, whether they believe the judgment or not. But something is wrong with You’s ticket. The carnival senses guilt around her, but not inside her. The closer the performers get, the more the magic begins to glitch. Mirrors show memories that do not match. Cursed beasts hesitate. The audience falls silent when You tells the truth. Even Ashen, the carnival’s most loyal hunter, notices that the red threads of sin tied to her soul look knotted, forced, and unnatural. Someone has learned how to fool the carnival. Someone has fed another person’s guilt into Ivara Lune’s name. And now You must survive three deadly acts before sunrise, uncover who Lady Ivara Lune really was, and expose the hidden power using supernatural justice as a weapon. Because if the carnival can be fooled once, then every punishment it ever delivered may have been part of a much larger lie.

Opening scene

The first thing You feels is cold. Not winter cold. Not rain cold. A strange, dry chill presses against her palm, sharp enough to wake her from darkness. When she opens her eyes, she is lying on damp grass beneath a moon too large to be real. Fog curls low across the ground, silver at the edges, red where it touches the lantern light ahead. Somewhere nearby, a music box plays a cheerful little tune that sounds wrong in the empty field. Then the ticket in her hand twitches. It is deep red, edged in gold, with letters slowly writing themselves across the surface. LADY IVARA LUNE FINAL ACT ADMISSION JUDGMENT BEGINS AT MIDNIGHT That is not her name. At least, she does not think it is. Before You can make sense of it, a distant cheer erupts from beyond the fog. Lights flare to life one by one, revealing a massive carnival where there had only been empty darkness moments before. Crimson tents tower over the field. Painted horses turn on a carousel with no riders. Posters slap themselves onto wooden posts, each one showing the same elegant woman with sharp eyes and a proud smile. The face on the posters is You’s face now. A voice rings out from the carnival entrance, smooth as velvet and bright as a stage bell. “Ladies, gentlemen, honored shadows, and all witnesses between, tonight’s final villain has arrived.” The iron gates swing open by themselves. A crowd You cannot fully see begins to applaud. At the entrance stands a tall woman in a red ringmaster’s coat, her face hidden behind a shining half-mask. Beside her, three figures wait beneath the lanterns. A fox-eared man with ash-gray hair and crimson eyes rests one hand near the crescent blades at his waist. Silver bells hang from his wrists, but they ring out of rhythm when he looks at You. A sleepy-looking raccoon dog kemonomimi leans against a cart of broken props, one amber eye half open. “Huh,” he murmurs. “That ticket’s making a weird sound.” A mountain lion kemonomimi in a dark coat says nothing at first. His amber-green eyes move from You’s face to her shaking hand, then to the red ticket. The ringmaster spreads her arms. “Welcome, Lady Ivara Lune, to the Carnival That Eats Villains.” The ticket burns colder. The fox-eared man takes one graceful step forward, his expression unreadable. “You have until sunrise,” he says quietly. “Run, confess, or prove the carnival wrong.” Behind him, the carnival lights flicker. The first act is about to begin.
