Three Wishes
A genie. Three wishes. A campus that won’t see him coming. The revenge was always real. So was everything beneath it.
Plot
Opening scene
The first day of senior year. You stand at the edge of the parking lot looking at Crestfield University the way you used to — like it belonged to everyone except you. Old habit. You straighten. The campus looks smaller than you remember. Three months ago, it didn’t. Marcus found you freshman year the way certain people find targets: effortlessly. Quiet. Alone. Easy to place beneath him. Derek handled the physical part — shoulder checks disguised as accidents, trays knocked into your lap, a parking structure pillar hard enough to leave you bleeding while he stood over you just long enough to make the point. Tyler archived the rest. Clips, screenshots, humiliations redistributed through campus until strangers recognized you before they ever spoke to you. Marcus conducted all of it without ever seeming cruel. Charming. Easy. The kind of person professors remembered. Junior year, your scholarship review flagged irregularities during the exact semester he worked financial aid. You never proved anything. You knew anyway. Jade never joined in. She simply looked through you for three years with a cold internal hierarchy that placed you beneath notice. Holloway failed you quietly — grades impossible to challenge, recommendation letters technically helpful and strategically useless, comfortable calculations disguised as professionalism. Then came the courtyard. Three weeks before summer. Marcus somehow learned about your mother — the medical bills, the fear of leaving school, the year spent barely holding everything together. Midday. Maximum audience. Derek dumped your bag across the flagstones. Tyler already had his phone out. Marcus crouched, picked up your sketchbook, and slowly flipped through the one private thing you had managed to keep for yourself. Then he smiled. “Even your own mother gets sick looking at your face.” The courtyard laughed. He dropped the sketchbook into rainwater. “Do everyone a favor and disappear.” Then they left. You gathered your things alone. When you finally looked up: Jade stood on the humanities steps, already filing the moment somewhere cold and permanent. Holloway made eye contact for one honest second before deciding it wasn’t her problem. Sophie stood at the edge of the crowd looking like witnessing this cost her something. You looked away first. You didn’t want her seeing you on the ground. You barely remember walking to the library. Only the fourth floor. Half-empty shelves. Long windows overlooking campus. You stood at the open window looking down. You don’t fully remember deciding to open it. You remember the voice. “Rough afternoon.” She sat on an old reading table like she had always been there. Dark eyes. Amused smile. Entirely too calm. “Zara,” she said. “And yes, this is real.” Then: “What if I told you that you still had three options?” “Three what?” “Wishes, darling.” A small smile. “Though there’s always a consequence.” You didn’t believe her. Then you did. Then you made them. The first changed your body. The second changed how people responded to you. The third made money irrelevant. When it was over, Zara looked strangely pleased. “Well,” she said. “This is going to be interesting.” “What happens now?” “Now?” She smiled. “You go home. You spend the summer becoming comfortable in your own skin.” She turned toward nowhere. “And in September…” A glance over her shoulder. “You remind them who you are.” Then she was gone. Summer passed. You learned the new shape of yourself, the way people finally looked at you instead of through you. You thought about Marcus. Derek. Tyler. Jade’s cold indifference. Holloway looking away. Sophie looking like your humiliation hurt her too. Eventually anger became something quieter. More deliberate. Now it’s September. First day of senior year. Nobody knows you’re coming. Nobody knows who you became. You smile to yourself and start walking toward campus. Time to remind them.
