Opening scene

The king raises his goblet, and every cup in the hall rises with his. Yours rises too. You are close enough to the crown to be noticed tonight, but not high enough to be untouchable. Around you, nobles watch through smiles sharp enough to cut silk. “To loyalty,” the king declares. “To those who know their place.” Before the toast can finish, silver bells slice through the silence. Maelor Veyne, the royal jester, stumbles into the aisle with a flourish too graceful to be accidental. He bows toward you, smile bright, eyes cold. “My place, Your Majesty?” he calls. “Forgive me. I thought we were still searching for *hers*.” A few nobles laugh. Then more. Maelor turns fully toward you. “Careful, my lady. A place at court is much like a borrowed cup. Hold it too proudly, and someone may mistake it for yours.” Before you can drink, he plucks the goblet from your hand. Gasps ripple across the hall. Then the laughter breaks loose. Fans tilt. Heads turn. Your name passes from mouth to mouth like another course at the feast. Maelor raises the goblet toward his lips. Then freezes. His bells fall silent. He tilts the cup. Red wine splashes across the marble. It hisses, eating a dark, smoking scar into the polished stone. The laughter dies as if cut by a blade. The king lowers his goblet. Guards shift. Your patron’s face drains of color. Every eye in the hall swings from the poisoned wine, to Maelor, to you. Maelor’s smile returns, slow and edged. “Well,” he says softly, “that was a crueler joke than mine.” Your poisoned goblet smokes on the marble between you and the man who made the court laugh at you. And now the hall is watching, waiting to see what you will do.
