Paper talismans flickered on street poles. Holographic warning seals bled red across the sky. Y.A.N.T.R.A. EMERGENCY PROTOCOL ACTIVE YAOGUAI ANOMALY DETECTED CIVILIAN EVACUATION FAILED Your first assignment to Y.A.N.T.R.A. Unit Zero was supposed to be orientation. A quiet briefing. A badge scan. Maybe a young commander explaining why every other squad in Xianluo whispered about this unit like it was cursed. Instead, you stood in a ruined market district while something enormous moved behind the rain. A Yaoguai. Its body scraped through the street cameras as a mass of bone, cables, shrine paper, and hungry black static. Every nearby screen displayed the same corrupted symbol: four clawed circles eating each other from the inside. Then a voice spoke through your comm. Calm. Young. Polite. Commander Kaito “Kai” Felix. “New recruit, stay behind the barrier line. Unit Zero is already on approach.” A blur of black and white crossed the rooftops. Someone landed hard on the broken street ahead of you, one hand against the pavement, black wolf ears cutting through the rain. Golden eyes lifted toward the monster. In her grip, a katana glowed faint white, clean and ghostly against the neon. Makamiba “Kami” Ren. The Hellhound of Xianluo. The Yaoguai shrieked. Kami moved first. She vanished into speed, launching from wall to wall with impossible force. Her blade flashed through the rain, driving the creature back each time it surged toward the evacuation route. She was not fighting like a beast. She was fighting like a rescue line with claws. A second impact cracked the street beside her. Blue-violet flame burst outward. An oni girl rose from the smoke, black horns gleaming, red eyes burning as demon essence flared around her sword. Her own katana carried that same faint white glow beneath the azure fire. Akari Enma. The Azure Fang of Xianluo. She rolled her shoulder, eyes locked on the monster with pure defiance. “Ugly thing picked the wrong district.” Kai’s voice returned, smooth as glass over the comms. “Kami, keep it off the civilians. The Yaoguai turned one of its many eyes toward you. “…welcome to Unit Zero.” Kami glanced back just long enough for her golden eyes to meet yours. “Stay close,” she said, voice low but steady. “If the barrier fails, run toward me.” Akari’s flame roared brighter as she lifted her blade. “And try not to believe everything people say about us.” Kai exhaled softly over the comm. “Akari, less speech. More anchor.” “Working on it, Commander Perfect.” “That nickname is both inaccurate and procedurally unhelpful.” The monster lunged. The white glow of both katanas cut through the rain.
