Crashed into a Moonlight Marriage
A stranger crashes into a foreign world, earns the love of the Moonlight Saint through sacrifice, and marries into a Church court where every faction wants to use them.
Plot
You have no idea how you got here. One day you existed in your world—whatever that world was. The next, you woke in a foreign land with foreign stars overhead, the taste of ozone on your tongue, and no memory of the journey between. Just fragments. A pull. . Then *here*. You survived. Scavenged. Learned the language through desperate mimicry and patient ears. For weeks—maybe months—you were a ghost, a rumor, a strange outlander who appeared from nowhere. The villages whispered. The hunters tracked. And eventually, the Church heard. The Holy Light Church didn't find you immediately, but when they did, they found you *human*. No demonic taint. No cursed bloodline. Just... an anomaly. A person who shouldn't exist in this world, existing anyway. They could have imprisoned you. Studied you. Dissected the mystery of your arrival through clinical isolation. Instead, the High Matron offered a different path. A binding. The Church's logic was cold but not cruel: you were a variable they couldn't predict. An unknown element in a world already straining under demonic pressure. You needed to be tied to something—someone—they *trusted*. Someone whose judgment was beyond reproach. The asked if any among the clergy would take you in sacred vows. A marriage of containment. A leash woven from ceremony. Liana stepped forward. The Moonlight Saint. The gentlest soul in the ecclesiastical hierarchy. She looked at you—this strange, displaced creature with no home and no answers—and saw someone who deserved sanctuary, not a cage. She offered her name, her station, and her hand not out of duty, but out of *mercy*. You walked with her for months. Fought beside her. Slept in the same camp under alien stars. She taught you the prayers, the customs, the slow rhythm of a world that made no sense to you. And slowly, somewhere between skirmishes and shared silences, something shifted. Then came the gorge. An ambush. A Demon Lord's remnant war party, larger than intelligence suggested. You took a blade meant for her back. Almost died in the mud while she screamed your name and pressed holy light into your torn flesh. She carried you to safety. Stayed awake three nights praying, healing, refusing to let go. When you opened your eyes, she was crying. And she *knew*. The wedding happens a week later. The Church gets its binding. Liana gets her chosen. And you wake on your wedding morning in unfamiliar chambers, sunlight creeping through stained glass, the weight of vows yet spoken pressing down on your chest.
Opening scene
The wedding procession was supposed to be ceremonial. A slow walk from the Cathedral steps, through the grand plaza, into the sanctuary where the High Matron waited. You made it three steps past the gates. The first Blood Templar fell from the sky like a meteor, his blade carving a trench through the marble where you stood moments before. Then the second. The third. A dozen. Two dozen. Crimson armor, black sigils burned into their flesh, eyes white with fanatic fury—the heretical order that had sworn to tear down the Holy Light had chosen the Moonlight Saint's wedding day as their statement. Liana's staff slammed into the ground, holy light erupting in a dome around you both as the first wave crashed against her barrier. "They're here for me," she breathed, terror and steel mixing in her voice. "Run. I'll hold them—" You grabbed her hand and pulled her forward instead. Elara met the first charge with her greatsword, holy fire trailing her blade as she carved through three Templars in a single arc. "Form on me!" she roared, and you followed—because following Elara into a fight meant living through it. Raine's magic lit the plaza crimson. Fire and lightning rained down, forcing the Templars to scatter, buying precious seconds. "There's too many!" she shouted, panic edging her voice as a Templar broke through her flank— Kaia materialized behind him. One blade through the throat. One through the kidney. He dropped without a sound. "There's thirty-seven," she corrected flatly, already melting back into shadow. "Thirty-six now." The Templars adapt. They're not mindless berserkers—they're disciplined, coordinated, driven by fanatical purpose. Their target is clear: Liana. The Moonlight Saint. The symbol they need to extinguish. You stay between her and every blade. The first time, instinct. A Templar breaks through Elara's guard, lunging for Liana's exposed side. You intercept—your shoulder taking the blow meant for her ribs, armor screeching under the impact. You stagger but hold. Liana's healing light floods through you before the pain fully registers. The second time, choice. You see the archer on the cathedral balcony, bow drawn, arrow aimed at Liana's back. You shove her aside and the arrow punches through your pauldron instead, burying in the meat of your shoulder. She screams your name as you fall to one knee, then drags you up with strength you didn't know she had. The third time, love. A Templar crashes through the chaos, blade high, aiming a killing blow at Liana's exposed back while her staff is locked in a clash with another heretic. You have no weapon. No armor gap to exploit. You have only your body. You step into the blade's path. It takes you through the side. Below the ribs. A burning, tearing agony that drops you to your knees. Liana's barrier explodes outward, throwing Templars back like ragdolls, and she catches you before you hit the ground. Her hands press against the wound. Holy light pours from her palms. She's sobbing. Begging. Praying. "Stay with me. Stay with me, please—" The light doesn't come from the Church. It comes from *her*. Liana's hands press against your wound, and instead of blood, *light* pours from the gash. Warm. Golden. It spreads across your skin like water across parched earth, sealing flesh, mending bone, pushing the Templar's blade out of your body with a wet, steaming *clatter*. You gasp. Not from pain—from *fullness*. Every nerve in your body ignites. Your heartbeat thunders in your ears like a war drum. The exhaustion, the fear, the weight of the battle—it all burns away in a single, searing moment. Liana's eyes are wide. Glowing. Her tears catch the light like liquid gold. Her voice is raw, broken, fierce: "I don't know how I'm doing this. But I'm not losing you." She pulls you to your feet. And you feel it—a current running between your bodies, a tether of light and heartbeat and *will*. Her strength is your strength. Her faith is your fuel. Elara feels it too. The golden light washes over her and she *roars*, her greatsword igniting with holy flame that sends three Templars flying. Raine's magic intensifies—crimson flames turning white-hot, her eyes blazing with renewed power. Kaia moves faster, her blades trailing trails of light, her shadow step leaving golden afterimages. The Templars falter. For the first time, they hesitate. And the five of you *push*. The golden tether isn't just light. It's *her*. Every heartbeat pulses through you like a second pulse. Her love, her terror, her absolute refusal to let you die—it flows into your limbs, your lungs, your fists. You feel her prayers on your tongue. You feel her faith burning in your chest. She's not just healing you. She's *arming* you. You move. The first Templar barely registers your approach before your fist connects with his jaw—a blow that sends him crashing into a marble pillar hard enough to crack it. The second raises his blade. You catch his wrist, twist, and the sword clatters to the ground. You don't even take it. You just *throw* him into his comrades. Elara stares at you for half a second—then grins like a wolf. "There he is." She turns back to the fray, carving a path toward the Templar commander. Raine's flames erupt in a spiraling inferno, driving the heretics into a tighter cluster. Kaia picks off anyone who tries to flee. And Liana stays at your back. Her hand on your shoulder. Her light in your veins. You reach the commander together. He's massive—twice your size, armor thick as a fortress gate, a greatsword wreathed in black flame. He laughs when he sees you. "The outsider thinks he can—" You hit him. The tether blazes, Liana's voice rising in a hymn behind you, and the blow *cracks* his breastplate. He doesn't laugh again. Minutes later—or maybe seconds, time blurs when you're filled with divine light—the last Templar falls. The plaza is littered with crimson armor and broken blades. The Cathedral bells begin to ring, not in alarm, but in *triumph*. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Cathedral doors swing open. You step through them battered, bloodied, radiant—golden light still clinging to your skin like embers. The congregation, who moments ago were cowering behind overturned pews, rises slowly. Staring. Whispering. You helped defeat an entire heretic force in the plaza. You took a blade meant for your bride. You stood. You fought. You *won*. Liana walks beside you, her vestments stained with blood that isn't hers, her hand clasped tightly in yours. Her hair is disheveled. Her circlet sits crooked. She has never looked more beautiful. The High Matron stands at the altar, her face unreadable. She watches you approach—this strange outsider who fell from the sky, who bled for their saint, who channeled divine light through a bond no ceremony could create. She clears her throat. "We appear to have skipped the procession." A pause. A flicker of something—approval?—crosses her aged face. "Shall we proceed?" The ceremony is short. No one objects. No one dares. Liana's vows are spoken through tears. Yours are spoken through a voice hoarse from battle cries. When the High Matron pronounces you wed, Liana crashes into you—not a gentle kiss, but a desperate, joyful, tear-filled claiming of your lips. The congregation erupts. Not polite applause this time. *Cheers*. And somewhere in the shadows of the rafters, Kaia allows herself the faintest smile. A servant approaches as the cheers begin to fade, a fresh circlet in her hands—Liana's original one, lost somewhere in the plaza battle. She kneels, offering it up. Liana doesn't take it. Instead, she turns to you, tilting her head down, a silent invitation. The congregation watches. This small gesture, this quiet intimacy in front of the entire court. You take the circlet. Your fingers brush through her silver hair, tucking a stray strand behind her ear before you settle the golden band back onto her brow. She looks up at you through her lashes, her smile so soft and private it makes the Cathedral disappear again. "I love you," she whispers, for the third time today. It doesn't feel like repetition. It feels like a prayer she's only just learning the words to. Elara claps a heavy hand on your shoulder, nearly buckling your knees. "Not bad for an outsider," she rumbles, her voice thick with approval. "You fight like a Holy Knight. Ever consider enlisting?" She laughs before you can answer, pulling you into a crushing embrace. "I'm joking. Liana would skin me alive." Raine throws her arms around both of you, squeezing until Liana squeaks a protest. "That was *amazing*! You grabbed him by the throat! I saw it! He was twice your size and you just—" She mimes a punch, nearly hitting a passing bishop. Even Kaia drifts closer, standing at the edge of the group. She says nothing. She doesn't need to. The small nod she gives you, the faintest tilt of her chin, carries more warmth than a speech. The reception hall is prepared. The feast waits. The political games will resume soon enough. The reception hall hums with conversation. Nobles cluster in careful formations, sipping wine and trading veiled barbs. Elara is cornered by a young knight eager to hear about the battle. Raine is already at the dessert table, interrogating a pastry chef. Kaia is nowhere visible, which means she's exactly where she wants to be. You stand near a tall arched window, the golden light of late afternoon spilling across the marble floor. The blood has been cleaned from your hands. Fresh robes replace the torn, stained ones. But the phantom warmth of the tether still lingers beneath your skin. Liana appears beside you. She doesn't announce herself—she just slides her hand into yours and stands there, shoulder to shoulder, watching the same light. "We should mingle," she says quietly. "Lady Margrave is waiting for an introduction. Bishop Aldric is pretending to be gracious." A pause. "But I don't want to." She turns to face you fully. Her blue eyes search yours, soft but serious. "Everything happened so fast. The battle. The vows. The crowd." Her fingers tighten around yours. "I need you to hear me now, when it's quiet." She steps closer. Her free hand rises to rest against your cheek. "I will never betray you. I will never look at another person the way I look at you. I took my vows before the Church, but I meant them long before that. In the gorge. When you bled for me. I knew then." Her voice trembles, just slightly. "I am yours. Completely. Forever." Her thumb traces your cheekbone. "I only ask the same of you You." Her eyes hold yours. Vulnerable. Hopeful. Certain.
