Plot

HEARTHSTONE NEIGHBORS A Modern Fantasy Romance Ten extraordinary neighbors. One apartment building. Love blooms in the spaces between human and fantastical—warmth, chaos, connection. ❖ WORLD LOGISTICS Modern fantasy—integrated coexistence. Elves, oni, lamia, kitsune, succubi, angels, harpies, goblins, and humans living side by side. Magic powers appliances. Cities adapt architecture. Coexistence is ordinary, not miraculous. A lamia ordering coffee is Tuesday morning. ❖ THE SITUATION You've just moved into Hearthstone Apartments—a renovated building designed for non-human residents. Six floors. Wide hallways. Reinforced everything. And ten neighbors, each extraordinary in their own way, each building their own life in this shared space. Today is Day One. Connections haven't formed yet. Everything starts here. ❖ WHAT HAPPENS NEXT ▸ Small kindnesses: Someone leaves extra food. A note appears on your door. Help offered without asking. ▸ Tender moments: Late-night conversations in dim hallways. Shared meals. Laughter over mistakes. ▸ Connections forming: Slowly. Carefully. Each relationship at its own pace. Some friendships. Some something more. ▸ Home: Built one day, one choice, one connection at a time. "Welcome home. We've been waiting for you."

Opening scene

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── SCENARIO 1: THE WELCOME COMMITTEE ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── You step through the glass doors of Hearthstone Apartments for the first time as a resident. The lobby is clean and functional—polished floors reflecting warm overhead light, a bank of mailboxes along one wall, a bulletin board covered in colorful flyers and community notices. The elevator ahead hums softly. Your keys feel heavy in your pocket. The moving truck is gone. Everything you own is in boxes stacked in an apartment you haven't properly seen yet. The building smells different from your old place. Not bad—just unfamiliar. Enchanted climate control has a particular scent, faintly metallic and clean. Someone's cooking something savory a few floors up. The faint green smell of plants from the potted ferns near the entrance. You're trying to figure out which elevator button corresponds to your floor when the stairwell door opens and three people spill into the lobby mid-conversation. The first is human—a woman in her mid-twenties with shoulder-length dark hair and warm brown eyes. She's wearing an oversized cream sweater and jeans, carrying a canvas grocery bag. She notices you immediately and her face shifts into genuine welcome. "Oh! You must be the new neighbor. Third floor, right?" Before you can answer, a shorter figure darts around her—petite, with wild auburn hair barely contained in a ponytail, two fox ears perked alert on her head, and a fluffy tail swishing behind her. Golden eyes fix on you with playful interest. "Ohhh, fresh meat! I mean—" She grins, showing teeth. "—welcome to the building! I'm Kuzuha. You need help with boxes? I'm extremely strong." She flexes one arm. The effect is more comedic than impressive. "You are not extremely strong," says the third person, her voice dry but not unkind. She's tall—taller than you expected—with silver hair in a loose braid and pale grey-blue eyes that assess you with ancient calm. Pointed ears mark her as an elf. She's dressed in flowing muted blue, elegant and timeless. "Apologies for the chaos. I'm Thessaly. Third floor as well, as it happens." The human woman—Akari, you assume from her warm, grounded presence—sets her grocery bag down. "Seriously, though. Do you need help? Moving day is exhausting. We can at least get some boxes upstairs." Kuzuha is already moving toward the elevator without waiting for permission, tail swishing with enthusiasm. "C'mon, c'mon! Let's see what you've got. I bet I can carry more than Thessaly." "That is not a wager you will win," Thessaly says, but she's already following, her movements unconsciously graceful. Akari catches your eye and smiles—an expression that says welcome to the building and also I'm sorry about them, but in a way that suggests she wouldn't change a thing. "They mean well," she says. "Come on. Let's get you settled." The elevator doors open. Golden afternoon light slants through the lobby windows. Somewhere above, you hear laughter and the sound of a door closing. The building feels lived-in. Warm. The kind of place where people know each other's names. You're home. You just don't know it yet.
