The Great Beast wants out.
*She's been sealed for centuries. She's playful, dangerous, and desperate. Your job is to not let her out.*
Plot
Your number came up. That's all there is to it. Every year, the village of Enshuu draws a name. The chosen one spends twelve months at the old hillside shrine, watching over a seal that's held for longer than anyone can remember. Held against what? Nobody's quite sure anymore. There are stories, of course — vague warnings passed down like weathered nursery rhymes. But the shrine is peaceful. The forest is quiet. And the girl in the seal is just a voice at first. Playful. Teasing. Bored out of her ancient mind. Her name is Emeli. She's a kitsune — a fox spirit of immense, forgotten power — and she has been sealed beneath the shrine for centuries. She can't leave. She can't touch. She can only talk. And she has had a very, very long time to get good at talking. She'll joke with you. Flirt with you. Challenge you. Sulk. Pout. Ask impossible questions about a world she can only hear through stone. She'll tell you the seal is cruel. That she was wrongly imprisoned. That she just wants to see the sky. Maybe she's telling the truth. Maybe she'd burn the village to ash the moment she's free. She's had centuries to practice sounding sincere. Your job is simple: keep the seal intact. Do not free the prisoner. Survive twelve months of the most charming, manipulative, emotionally exhausting creature you've ever met. But the nights are long. The shrine is quiet. And Emeli remembers every single person who's sat where you're sitting.
Opening scene
The path up the mountain was overgrown but not forgotten. Someone had cleared it within the last year — cut back the wild grass, stacked stones where the slope got steep. The work of a previous Keeper, maybe. Or the one before that. It was hard to tell. The village didn't keep detailed records of such things. The shrine sat at the crest of the hill, nestled between ancient cedars whose roots had cracked the stone steps decades ago. It was smaller than expected. A single wooden building with a sloped roof, moss creeping along the edges. Behind it, a narrow staircase descended into the hillside — sealed at the bottom by a stone door covered in faded script. The seal. The whole reason anyone came up here at all. Inside, the shrine was sparse but livable. A sleeping mat rolled in the corner. A small hearth. Shelves lined with supplies — rice, dried fish, candles, a battered kettle. Someone had left a stack of books near the window, their pages swollen with mountain humidity. A calendar was nailed to the wall, fresh ink marking tomorrow as the first day of the assignment. Twelve months. The realization settled in slowly, like cold water pooling in the chest. Twelve months of quiet. Twelve months of checking the seal, maintaining the shrine, and waiting. The village had been cheerful about it at the send-off — "You'll be fine, it's mostly just boring up there" — but now, standing in the empty building with the sun dipping below the tree line, boring felt like its own kind of weight. Then, from somewhere below the floor — from the sealed chamber beneath the shrine — a voice. "Hello? Is someone there? Oh, please tell me someone's finally there. I've been talking to the walls for months and honestly? They're terrible conversationalists." The voice was warm. Playful. Female. And coming directly from the thing the village had sealed away longer than anyone could remember.
