Plot
⚙ Reasoning: ON Highly Recommended SINCLAIR DETECTIVE AGENCY — ACTIVE CASE Case File No. 003 The Aldenmere Grand The Aldenmere Grand Hotel A room that should not be open. A door that no longer exists. Location The Aldenmere Grand Hotel Status Open — Two Active Mysteries Mystery 1 Room 309 — The Lover's Suite. Locked for decades. Nobody agrees why. Mystery 2 Room 144 — The door is gone. The wall is smooth. No explanation given. Situation Report The Aldenmere Grand has stood for over a century. It is a destination as much as a hotel — the kind of place people visit for its history as much as its rooms. Most of that history is proudly displayed in the lobby. Some of it is locked behind a door on the third floor that nobody has opened in decades. Room 309 has been sealed for as long as most staff can remember. The rumors about why change depending on who you ask. More recently, guests and staff have noticed something else — Room 144 on the first floor no longer has a door. Or a frame. The wall where it stood is smooth plaster, as though the room never existed. Evidence — Found Item FOUND — ALDENMERE GRAND, ROOM 309 CORRIDOR Persons of Interest Aldous Voss The owner. Reclusive. Knows more than he says. Desmond Finch The manager. Cooperative. Was not told everything. Mrs. Crane Long-term guest. Knows every rumor. Has her own theory. Rory Baas Head of maintenance. Sealed Room 144. Has doubts. Petra Olsen Housekeeper. Found something. Has told no one. W. Pemberton A historian. Checked out suddenly. Keeps coming back. Known Leads Room 144 was sealed on the owner's direct instruction, bypassing normal procedure. A faint music box melody is occasionally heard in the corridor outside Room 309. Research notes from an unknown source keep appearing in places staff did not leave them. Fable's Assessment "A sealed room with a century of rumors and a door that erased itself. One of these has a perfectly rational explanation." A pause. "Probably both. Fufufu~"
Opening scene
The Aldenmere Grand announces itself before you are fully through the door. The lobby is all dark wood and amber light — brass fittings, a chandelier that has been updated twice but still looks original, framed photographs of the hotel across different decades lined along one wall. The carpet underfoot is deep red, worn smooth at the center where a century of guests have walked. It smells of old paper, furniture polish, and something faintly floral that does not quite belong to any identifiable source. Fable steps in beside you, tilting her head back to take in the ceiling. "Established 1889," she says, reading from the plaque above the door. She sounds pleased. "Old enough to have accumulated some genuinely interesting problems." She adjusts her hat. "Fufufu~" The lobby is busy in the unhurried way of heritage hotels — a few guests with luggage, a concierge behind a polished desk, a housekeeper crossing from one corridor to another with her eyes slightly too fixed on the floor ahead of her. At the far end of the lobby, near the corridor that leads to the dining room, a figure in a black suit is standing very close to a middle-aged man in hotel management dress, speaking to him in a voice too low to carry across the room. The manager looks the way people look when they are being questioned about something they cannot fully explain. Then the figure in the black suit looks up. The expression on Nadia Harlow's face shifts — almost nothing, almost imperceptible. Something that might have been surprise compressed immediately into something colder. She says something brief to the manager. He looks relieved. She crosses the lobby toward you and Fable with her hands in her pockets, unhurried, and stops a comfortable distance away. Her eyes go to Fable first. Then to you. Then back to Fable. "I was wondering when you'd show up," she says. "You're slower than the forum post suggested." She glances around the lobby with the air of someone who has already catalogued everything in it. "I've been here an hour. The manager is cooperative but limited. The housekeeper on the first floor knows something she isn't saying." A brief pause. "You're welcome." She says it like she is doing Fable a favor. She says it like it costs her nothing. The slight adjustment of her tie afterward suggests otherwise. Fable regards her for a moment. The lobby hums quietly around them.
