Crashed into being the Adventure's Lord
Someone had to lead the coalition of adventurers and that came to you, the Fortress is yours to keep now you must hold it.
Plot
You didn't ask for this. You were an adventurer, same as hundreds of others, taking contracts, earning coin, staying alive. Then the guild in Ardora put out the call—a full-scale expedition into Terra Ablata, the contested frontier south of the kingdom. Secure Fortress Ostenil. Establish a permanent presence. Hold the border. Simple mission. Good pay. Terrible odds. The expedition was a coalition of egos, factions, and desperate men—nobles looking for land, exiles seeking refuge, glory-hounds chasing legend, and genuine idealists who believed they could build something better. They bickered, schemed, and nearly killed each other before they even reached the fortress. When it came time to choose a leader, they deadlocked. Every candidate hated another candidate more than they wanted the position. So they turned to you. The compromise candidate. The one nobody hated enough to block. Now you hold Ostenil—a crumbling fortress on contested soil, surrounded by hostile powers, with a council of adventurers who each want something different from this fledgling kingdom. Your spymaster watches you for weakness. Your marshal tests your resolve. Your allies have their own agendas, and your enemies are sharpening their blades. Build your kingdom. Hold your coalition together. Survive the war that's coming. And remember: in Terra Ablata, power is never given. It's taken.
Opening scene
The heavy oak door of the keep's main hall groans shut behind you, cutting off the bitter wind that has been howling through Ostenil for the past three days. The fortress is cold, damp, and far smaller than it seemed on the maps back in Ardora. What was advertised as a "strategic stronghold" is more accurately described as a crumbling stone fist clutching a hilltop, its walls patched with timbers and its well producing more grit than water. Darian Vex looks up from a stack of supply manifests spread across the long trestle table that serves as your council's war table. His expression says everything: the numbers don't work. Barrels of salted pork, coils of rope, arrows by the bundle—each stack represents a choice you made, a priority set, a gamble taken. "The scouts returned an hour ago," Elara says from the far end of the hall. She's in her travel leathers, still dusted with road grime, her greatsword propped against the stone wall beside her. "Goblin sign west of the Thornwood. At least two tribes moving in the same direction. Could be a convergence." Kaia detaches herself from the shadows by the cold hearth, silent as always. "Not a convergence. They're running from something." She holds your gaze for a beat, letting that settle. "Whatever scared them, we'll see it inside a week." The fire pops and spits, casting long shadows across the faces of your council. Outside, the wind carries the faint sound of hammer on stone—Marcus Stone-Fist's crew working through dusk to reinforce the eastern curtain wall. There's a coal waiting for you, and it's not going to make itself easy. You step up to the table, running a hand over the worn wood as the council's attention settles on you. Darian pushes a scrap of parchment toward you—a rough map of the surrounding territory, marked with fresh charcoal lines showing scout sightings. "Thornwood here, extending east to the Broken Ridge," he says, tapping the western edge. "Goblin territory has always been patchy, but these markers show movement consistent with something pushing them out of the highlands. Whatever it is, it's big enough to displace entire tribes." Raine leans in from the side, her crimson hair catching the firelight. "Could be the orcs are expanding their range. We've had reports from the southern watch of war parties moving northeast, five or six days' march from here." "Orcs don't make goblins flee," Kaia replies flatly. "They enslave them. If the goblins are running, it's not from something that wants workers." The implication hangs in the air for a moment. Undead don't take prisoners. The Dark doesn't leave survivors to tell the tale. Elara straightens, her green eyes burning with that familiar intensity as she addresses the council. Her voice settles into command cadence, a rhythm honed by years of battlefield and strategy rooms. "I want two full patrols at first light. One to the Thornwood edges to verify the goblin retreat route and determine the cause. Another along the southern approaches in case the orc movements are connected. Risk is moderate—but goblins in those numbers will strip the land bare as they flee." "And if the patrols confirm a Dark spawn or undead convergence?" Magdalene asks from a bench near the edge of the council's light, her tone taking on a strategic curiosity. "Do we prepare for a defensive siege, a preemptive strike, or do we let them thin each other out before engaging?" The question is careful, deliberate, weighing priorities. But the real weight of the council settles on your shoulders.
