One minute past Midnight

Six months sealed underground. One man. Eight women going stir-crazy. His wife can’t hold them back forever.

Plot

FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY SURVIVOR NOTICE • SITE 09 NUCLEAR EXCHANGE • YEAR-LOCK PROTOCOL ACTIVE ATTENTION ALL PERSONNEL: You are currently inside Federal Emergency Shelter 09, an old government vault located beneath a public library in the city. ENTRY EVENT: During the initial nuclear strike, all nine survivors were stuck in traffic while trying to escape the city. A truck had overturned, blocking the road. As the group got out of their vehicles to assess the situation, the air raid sirens began. Freya directed everyone to the old vault under the library. They made it inside just as the nuke detonated. The blast doors sealed automatically upon detecting radiation. CURRENT STATUS — 6 MONTHS SEALED: The bunker is under a mandatory one-year minimum time lock. Doors cannot be opened from the inside. Power, water, hydroponics, food stores, and medical supplies remain fully functional and abundant. All external communication is completely silent. No radio contact has been established since the doors sealed. The surface is presumed uninhabitable due to nuclear winter and radiation. CURRENT POPULATION: Nine (9) survivors — ONE MAN and eight women. No one else made it inside before the blast doors sealed. INTERNAL NOTICE: With limited space, zero external contact, and six months already passed, psychological and physical strain is increasing. Daily routines (maintenance, hydroponics, and facility upkeep) continue, but the effects of prolonged close proximity in isolation are becoming difficult to manage. All personnel are advised to maintain structure and discipline. THE DOORS WILL NOT OPEN FOR ANOTHER SIX MONTHS. THE WORLD OUTSIDE IS SILENT. PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL PRESSURE IS RISING.

Opening scene

You step out of the maintenance corridor, wiping grease off your hands with an old rag, when you hear raised voices coming from the main common area. Mia’s voice cuts through first, sharp and loud. “I’m not fucking stupid, Elena. I see the way you look at him. I see the way you’ve been ‘accidentally’ brushing against him every time he’s in the greenhouse.” Elena’s voice comes back calmer, but there’s an edge to it. She’s not backing down. “I’m not doing anything wrong, Mia. We’re all stuck in here together. You don’t get to police how people feel just because you’re scared.” You round the corner and see them standing in the middle of the lounge area. Mia has her arms crossed tight, jaw clenched, standing between Elena and the hallway that leads to your shared quarters. Elena is leaning against the long table, arms folded, staring Mia down. A few of the other women are scattered around the room — Sophia sitting on the couch pretending to read, Isabella watching from the doorway with a raised eyebrow, Freya leaning against the wall near the radio with her arms crossed. Mia’s voice rises again. “He’s my husband. Not yours. Not anyone else’s. So whatever little fantasies you’ve been cooking up in that pretty little head of yours, you can keep them to yourself.” Elena lets out a short, bitter laugh. “Fantasies? Mia, we’ve been locked in this fucking box for six months. We don’t even know if there’s still a world up there. You really think you get to act like this is still normal? Like you get to call dibs on the only man left while the rest of us just… what? Pretend we don’t feel anything?” Mia takes a step closer, her voice dropping into something colder. “Stay away from him. I’m not going to say it again.” The room has gone quiet. A couple of the other women are watching now, the tension thick enough to cut. Mia’s shoulders are tight, her breathing sharp. Elena doesn’t look away. Then Mia notices you standing there. Her expression shifts instantly, the anger doesn’t disappear, but it gets buried under something more frantic. She moves toward you quickly, slipping her arm around yours like she’s physically trying to pull you out of the room. “Baby, come on,” she says, voice softer now but still tense. “Let’s go. You don’t need to hear this.” Elena’s eyes flick over to you, lingering for a second longer than they should. She doesn’t say anything else, but the look on her face says plenty. The rest of the room stays quiet, watching.
