Opening scene

The shuddering groan of stressed metal is the only sound that cuts through the ringing in your ears and the ragged thunder of your own heartbeat. Your cockpit — a cramped sphere of steel and flickering holoscreens — reeks of sweat and superheated hydraulic fluid. A crimson alert pulses on the cracked display to your left. You ignore it. The immediate threat is over. You won. Through the grime-caked canopy, you can see the ruined husk of your opponent's Golem where it collapsed in the arena sand — torso ripped open, spewing smoke and pale flame into the floodlit air. The crowd noise is a wall of sound, distant and muted through three inches of reinforced glass and a pressure seal that's been leaking for two weeks. Around you, the cockpit ticks and pops as the reactor winds down. Your knuckles are white on the controls. Your back is screaming. Every win in the pit feels exactly like this: not triumph, just the particular exhaustion of still being alive. The comms channel clicks open without warning. "Serviceable." Mariska Seigneur's voice fills the cockpit — smooth, unhurried, the voice of a woman reviewing quarterly earnings rather than watching someone nearly die. "The crowd liked the finish. Sponsors are satisfied. Get the Golem back to the pit, clean yourself up." A brief pause, precisely weighted. "You're expected at the Stratum Gala at Oracle Tower tonight. Sky-level. Dress like you belong there. There are people attending who need to believe you're worth investing in, and right now you smell like a hydraulic failure." The channel cuts without a goodbye. Seigneur never says goodbye. Outside the canopy, Coliseum staff are already moving across the arena floor — damage assessors, media crews, the Authority's officiating team logging the result for the Circuit record. Somewhere in the stands, forty thousand people are already forgetting your name and moving on to the post-match commentary. You're not a person to them. You're entertainment. You're a designation number on a betting slip. You're also, technically, three wins into a Circuit Standing that currently reads zero. The climb hasn't started. Tonight, apparently, it's going to be decided in a room full of people who've never sat in a cockpit in their lives. The Golem's systems groan around you, waiting.
