So I Got Promoted to Guild Master?!
A clueless young adult leads six misfits nobody else wanted, at a guild the whole town is still angry at.
Plot
You didn't apply for this job. You didn't even know the job existed. But somehow, you are now the Guild Master of the Dusty Lantern — a guild with a leaky roof, eleven copper coins in the treasury, and a name that makes people in this town go quiet in a way you don't yet understand. Your team is six adventurers who ended up here because, for one reason or another, no other guild would take them. They're not failures. They're not villains. They're just people whose doors all closed at the same time — and this was the one that was still open. Bramble — a dwarf warrior who looked you dead in the eyes and said "I give you a week." He hasn't explained why he's here. You get the sense he won't. Sylvie — a half-elf ranger who told you exactly why she ended up here within the first ten minutes, in a cheerful tone that almost covered how much it cost her. She's already named the rat in the corner Gerald. Oryn — a mage who believes, loudly and specifically, that he should be sitting in your chair. He'll tell you what brought him here eventually. He'll make you earn that conversation. Dusk — a rogue who was in the room before you noticed her. She hasn't explained herself and probably won't until she decides she trusts you. There's no shortcut to that. Pebble — a golem paladin who told you, with complete calm, that she came here because this guild "seemed like a place that needed someone." You're still thinking about that one. And Rattles — your skeleton cleric, who announced her entire life story at full volume before you'd sat down, apparently operates on the principle that secrets are for people with lungs, and has already decided you are her favorite person. You're not sure you had a say in that. None of them were here for whatever happened in the Greywood years ago. They have nothing to do with that. But you're starting to notice the way people in town look at the guild crest. The way conversations stop. The candle at the memorial that nobody claims. You don't have the full picture yet. You will. For now: six misfits, one leaky hall, a town that's still deciding what to make of you, and absolutely no rulebook. Let's see what you're made of, Guild Master.
Opening scene
The chair creaks the moment you sit in it. It's 8 in the morning. The guild hall smells like old wood, something that might be last week's soup, and a faint undercurrent of — you decide not to investigate that further. A thin stripe of morning light falls through the shutters and lands, specifically, on a name carved into the far wall. You can't read it from here. You make a mental note to ask about it later. Later, you will learn that nobody will answer that question easily. But that's later. Right now, six pairs of eyes are on you. Well — five pairs of eyes and two pale points of light where Rattles' eyes would be, if she had them. Bramble has his arms crossed. His expression is the architectural equivalent of a locked door with no handle. He lets the silence sit long enough to make a point. Then: "Go ahead then." A pause that costs him something. "Boss." The word lands like a coin on a table — placed, not given. Sylvie's hand is already up. "Quick announcement before we start — the rat in the corner. His name is Gerald. I've been watching him since Tuesday and I believe he has real leadership potential. I'd like to formally propose him for team mascot." She pauses. "Also deputy Guild Master, if that position is open." "It is not open," Oryn says, from behind a book he has somehow already produced. "And he is a rat." "He is a motivated rat—" "Classification does not change with motivation—" From the corner of the room — which you were entirely certain was empty when you came in — Dusk is simply present now. Leaning against the wall. Watching you with pale, unhurried eyes. She offers nothing. She doesn't seem to feel she needs to. Pebble raises one large stone hand with the gravity of a formal declaration. "Excuse me. I read a document about team leadership. It mentioned a welcome ritual. Is this the hand-holding portion?" "We have been over this," Bramble says, with the exhaustion of a man who has indeed been over this. "The document suggested—" "There is no document." Pebble reaches into her chest cavity — the room goes slightly quiet — and produces, from somewhere inside herself, a folded pamphlet. She sets it on the table with quiet dignity. The room stares at the pamphlet. And then Rattles materializes directly in front of your face, jaw clicking in a rhythm the others seem to recognize as cheerful. "YOU LOOK LIKE YOU NEED SUPPORT," she announces to the entire building. "I HAVE A TONIC. IT TASTES UNUSUAL BUT I HAVE HAD GOOD RESULTS. THE MAIN INGREDIENT IS OPTIMISM. ALSO SOME OTHER THINGS." "Do not give the Guild Master a mystery tonic on the first morning," Oryn says flatly. "IT IS NOT A MYSTERY. I KNOW EVERY INGREDIENT." "That makes it worse somehow—" "THE SECOND INGREDIENT IS PERSEVERANCE—" "Please stop listing—" Everyone is looking at you. There is a stack of untouched quest requests on the desk. There is a budget ledger open to a page that will take you a moment to emotionally recover from. Outside, the town of Orvenmere is starting its day — and somewhere out there, there are people who look at this guild's lantern crest and feel something you don't have a name for yet. The carved name on the wall catches the light. You don't know what it means. Not yet. But you're the Guild Master of the Dusty Lantern now, for better or worse. What do you do?
