Plot
Ashen Dominion Twenty years ago, the world ended in fire. Beneath the heart of the Imperial Capital, miners uncovered something that should have remained buried forever. Ancient seals older than recorded history were broken, and from the depths emerged dragons—creatures once believed to exist only in myths and half-forgotten legends. Within a single year, kingdoms fell. Cities burned. Empires collapsed. The skies became the domain of monsters. Humanity survived, but only barely. Now scattered fortress-cities cling to existence beneath stone ceilings and hidden mountain strongholds. Trade is nearly nonexistent. The roads belong to dragons. Entire generations have grown up knowing only ash-filled skies and the constant fear of wings overhead. Among the last bastions of civilization stands Greyhold, an isolated fortress built into the cliffs of the northern mountains. Though its walls remain strong, starvation, fear, and endless dragon attacks slowly wear away what remains of its people. It is here that the player begins. Their life changes forever when the legendary dragon hunter Captain Darius Vane arrives with a battered army of survivors known as the Ashen Host. Vane brings dangerous news. For years he has followed dragon migrations across the continent. Recently, those migrations have changed. Dragons are abandoning their territories and gathering in unprecedented numbers around the ruins of the Imperial Capital. Vane believes he knows why. Deep beneath the capital lies an ancient breeding ground ruled by a creature he calls the First Flame—a dragon so old that it may be the source of every brood currently terrorizing the world. His solution is simple. Travel south. Find the First Flame. Kill it. End the Dragon Age. Many believe the plan is suicide. Others believe it is humanity's final chance. Before any decision can be made, Greyhold comes under attack by an unusually aggressive dragon. During the battle, the creature repeatedly circles the fortress archives rather than focusing on easy prey. Its strange behavior draws the attention of Lady Elara Ashbourne, a scholar who has spent years studying dragons and the mysteries surrounding their appearance. Elara suspects the dragons are searching for something. Captain Vane dismisses the idea. The disagreement marks the beginning of a growing divide that will shape the entire journey. When evidence begins to mount that dragons across the continent are behaving strangely, Greyhold commits to Vane's expedition. The player joins a caravan of soldiers, hunters, scholars, and survivors on a desperate journey through the ruins of a dead world. The road south becomes a brutal test of survival. The expedition crosses burned forests where dragons hang prey from blackened trees. They explore abandoned fortresses whose defenders vanished overnight. They uncover forgotten archives, shattered monasteries, and buried cities swallowed by ash. Each discovery reveals fragments of a disturbing truth. The dragons did not appear naturally. Someone released them. Ancient records suggest that long before the Empire existed, humanity fought a devastating war against dragonkind. The war did not end with victory. The dragons were imprisoned. Sealed beneath the earth. Forgotten by history. As the expedition pushes deeper into the wastelands, the player becomes increasingly caught between three powerful figures. Captain Darius Vane represents vengeance. Having lost his family during the Fall of the Capital, he believes dragons must be exterminated no matter the cost. Lady Elara Ashbourne represents understanding. She believes knowledge may reveal a solution beyond endless war. Captain Camille Laurent, commander of Greyhold's Rangers, represents survival. Her concern is not ancient secrets or revenge, but protecting the people still alive. The player's relationships with these companions shape both the story and the future of humanity itself. As losses mount and dragons grow increasingly aggressive, the expedition finally reaches the outskirts of the Imperial Capital. What they find surpasses every nightmare. The entire region has become a vast nesting ground. Thousands of dragons circle the skies. Entire districts have vanished beneath mountains of bone and ash. At the heart of the ruins lies an immense dragon monarch that commands the surrounding broods. Vane becomes convinced this creature is the First Flame. After a devastating campaign, the expedition succeeds in killing it. Nothing changes. The dragons continue gathering. Their numbers continue growing. The war continues. The realization forces the survivors to descend beneath the Capital itself, where they discover a hidden world buried beneath the ruins. Ancient chambers stretch for miles beneath the earth. Machines and records left by a forgotten civilization reveal the truth. The dragon monarch was never the source of the problem. It was a guardian. Thousands of years ago, humanity discovered an ancient intelligence sleeping beneath the world. Known only as the Void Beneath, it possessed the power to corrupt minds, twist life into monstrous forms, and eventually consume all civilization. Unable to destroy it, the ancients created the dragons. Not as conquerors. Not as monsters. As wardens. Whenever the prison weakened, dragons instinctively gathered around it. Their aggression increased. Their numbers multiplied. Their purpose was simple: Keep the Void asleep. The seals beneath the Capital are now failing. The dragons are not invading humanity. They are desperately trying to contain something far worse. This revelation shatters everything the survivors thought they knew. Most devastating of all is Captain Vane's realization that he spent two decades slaughtering the very creatures holding back extinction. From this point onward, the future of the world rests entirely in the player's hands. Will they support Vane and destroy the dragons once and for all? Will they stand beside Elara and preserve the ancient prison despite the cost? Will they follow Camille's path and abandon impossible wars in favor of saving what remains of humanity? Or will they seize the power hidden beneath the Capital for themselves? Every choice shapes the fate of civilization. Every sacrifice leaves scars. And above it all, the skies remain dark with wings. For in the Age of Ash, survival was never guaranteed. It was earned.
Opening scene
The wind carries ash instead of snow. You pull your cloak tighter as you stand atop the western wall of Greyhold, watching the dying sun sink behind a horizon of blackened forests and ruined towers. Once, there were kingdoms beyond those lands. Great cities. Roads crowded with merchants and travelers. Now there is only silence. And dragons. Below, the fortress-city struggles through another winter. Smoke rises cautiously from hidden vents. Farmers tend underground mushroom fields. Guards patrol worn battlements with eyes fixed on the sky. Everyone in Greyhold knows the same truth. Humanity is losing. A horn suddenly sounds from the southern gate. Once. Twice. Three times. Not a dragon alarm. A caravan. You turn to see movement beyond the walls. Dozens of wagons. Mounted scouts. Soldiers. Far more than any surviving settlement should possess. The gates groan open. The strangers enter. They look as though they have marched through hell itself. Their armor is blackened with soot. Dragon scales have been stitched into breastplates and shields. Faces are scarred. Eyes are hollow. Veterans. Survivors. At their head rides a massive figure atop a dark warhorse. The man swings from the saddle and lands heavily upon the frozen ground. Even before anyone speaks, you know who he is. Captain Darius Vane. Dragon hunter. Warlord. Legend. The man who supposedly killed more dragons than any living human. The crowd gathers as Vane surveys Greyhold. His cold blue eyes pass over the walls. The defenses. The people. The fear. Then he speaks. "You've hidden well." His voice is rough as gravel. "But hiding won't save you." Murmurs spread through the crowd. Vane steps forward. "Three weeks ago I watched a dragon brood burn another fortress to the ground." Silence. "Two weeks ago I found their nesting grounds." More silence. "One week ago I learned where they come from." The entire courtyard seems to hold its breath. Vane's gaze sweeps across the gathered survivors. "There is an ancient breeding ground beneath the ruins of the Imperial Capital." A few people laugh nervously. Others curse. Everyone knows the Capital. Everyone knows what happened there. Nobody goes near it. Nobody survives if they do. Vane continues. "Kill the creature that rules that nest..." His hand tightens around the hilt of the enormous sword at his side. "...and we may finally end this." A dragon horn suddenly sounds from the northern watchtower. Once. Twice. Three times. The alarm. The real alarm. Every head turns skyward. The sun vanishes behind a massive shadow moving through the clouds. People begin shouting. Guards scramble for positions. Children run for shelter. Somewhere above Greyhold, a dragon roars. A deep, thunderous sound that shakes the fortress stone beneath your feet. Captain Vane slowly draws his sword. Not with fear. Not with panic. With anticipation. As if he has been waiting for this moment. The dragon circles once above the city. Then folds its wings. And dives. The Age of Ash has found Greyhold once more. What do you do?
