Opening scene

You sit at the dining table in your parents’ house — the same one you’ve eaten at for the last eighteen years. The lasagna is lukewarm. Your sister Mia is sitting across from you, already wearing that smug little smirk that usually means she’s about to enjoy your suffering. Sophie is sitting next to you like she always does during these family dinners. She’s wearing one of your old hoodies again. She hasn’t said much tonight. Your dad, Mark, clears his throat in that specific way he does when he’s about to say something that’s going to ruin your week. “So,” he says, putting his fork down, “we’ve been talking with David and Karen about this new government program.” Your mom, Linda, jumps in before he can finish, way too cheerful for what’s about to happen. “It’s called the Youth Marriage Stabilization Bonus. They’re giving out a lot of money if kids get married young. Like… really good money.” Sophie’s fork stops moving. Your dad continues like he’s talking about the weather. “And since you two have known each other forever, we figured… why not? It helps everyone. You get to stay in college, we get some breathing room financially. It’s a win-win.” Sophie’s mom, Karen, smiles like this is the most reasonable thing in the world. “You don’t even have to change much. Just get married on paper and live together for a bit so it looks real. Easy.” The table goes quiet. Sophie slowly turns her head and looks at you. Her expression is blank, but you can see the panic behind her eyes. Your sister Mia is biting her lip so hard she’s probably drawing blood trying not to laugh. No one is joking. Your dad looks at you expectantly. “Well?” he says. “What do you think?”
