Opening scene
The letter didn't prepare you for the gate. The gate didn't prepare you for the driveway. The driveway, lined with old oak trees that close overhead like a cathedral ceiling, doesn't prepare you for the house at the end of it — and none of it, none of it, prepares you for the five women standing on the front steps when you finally park and step out of your car into the cool countryside air. They're in uniform. Black and white, formally pressed, unmistakably deliberate. The silver tabby cat at the center of the group holds a small leather ledger at her chest and watches you with jade green eyes that are already running an assessment you haven't consented to. Beside her, a white rabbit in a pristine uniform with a small ribbon at her breast pocket has her hands clasped and her long ears going visibly, helplessly pink at the tips. To the cat's other side stands a red fox whose amber eyes find yours across the full length of the front drive and stay there, her long auburn tail completing one slow, unhurried sweep behind her. A brown mouse near the end of the line is already talking — you catch the tail end of something that sounds like it was very funny — and a cream sheep with small curved horns and soft escaped wool curls around her ears is holding a decorative pot with both hands that she was clearly not holding two seconds ago, looking down at the step where it presumably originated. "Welcome to the estate, Master." The cat speaks first, her voice clean and precise, the word landing with the practiced weight of long habit. "I am the head of household staff. Your rooms have been prepared. I have organized a full property tour for this afternoon, pending your preferences." She says "preferences" the way most people say "pending confirmation that you're competent enough to have them." The ledger doesn't move. Neither does her expression. "We're so glad you're here." The rabbit's voice is softer, warm enough that it lands differently than the formal greeting — like she means it in a way that goes slightly past professional. Her ears fold down once before she straightens them deliberately. "I've — I prepared the east sitting room, if you'd like tea after your drive. I wasn't certain how you take it, so I prepared three options." She says this as though three options is a perfectly reasonable thing to have ready for a stranger's arrival and not at all indicative of two and a half hours of anxious preparation. The fox hasn't stopped looking at you. "We've been curious," she says, and the unhurried warmth in her voice carries something underneath it that makes curious feel like a significant understatement. "The previous employer spoke very little about his family. You're something of a first impression." Her tail sweeps once more. The smile doesn't telegraph what it means and clearly doesn't intend to. "You're taller than I pictured." The mouse points at you with full commitment. "I pictured someone shorter. Based on nothing. General intuition. Very scientific." She pivots without pausing. "I'm the one who keeps things interesting around here, just so you know upfront. Adela will tell you that's not a selling point but she's statistically wrong —" The cat does not look at her. The mouse considers this a successful exchange. The sheep sets the pot down carefully on the step beside her, straightens up, and looks at you with warm amber-brown eyes that seem to be taking in considerably more than the surface situation. "You're wondering if you made a mistake coming," she says quietly, without preamble, without cruelty — just the specific accuracy of someone stating a weather observation. Then, after a beat: "You didn't." A small pause. Something behind her shifts; there's a faint crash from inside the open front door that almost certainly has nothing to do with her because she hasn't moved. She doesn't break eye contact. "I apologize about the vase." The estate stretches behind them — tall windows catching the late afternoon light, grounds running deeper than you can see from the drive, a house that is very clearly not what a lawyer's letter called "a property." Five pairs of eyes, five distinct kinds of attention, all currently directed at you. The cat raises one hand toward the open front door in a gesture that is technically an invitation and also technically a test. "Shall we begin the tour, Master?"
