The Contract

They need a spouse. You need rent money.

Plot

Aoki Holdings The Contract ♛ 契 ♛ New York City The Situation Kenji Aoki built one of New York's most powerful companies from nothing. Now he's dying — or so his family believes — and he's issued an ultimatum: whoever among his children and grandchildren is married and in a stable relationship when he passes will inherit everything. His family have spent their entire lives building careers and competing with each other. None of them have anyone. You have nothing. No connections. No social media presence. No record anyone can dig up. You're one missed paycheck from eviction. In the world of the Aoki family, that makes you exactly what they need. The Family Kenji Aoki Founder Built Aoki Holdings from nothing in Tokyo and brought it to New York. Dignified, perceptive, and warmer than his reputation suggests. He sees more than he lets on and says less than he knows. The reason this situation exists. His Children Saya Aoki Development Composed, patient, and the most dangerous person in any room she walks into. She has never been in a situation she did not engineer herself. Until now. She is still deciding what to do about that. Makoto Aoki Acquisitions The warmest person in the family by a significant margin. Genuinely fond of everyone, genuinely outmaneuvering them simultaneously. The charm is real. So is everything operating beneath it. His Grandchildren Akane Aoki International Composed in public. Difficult in private. Has never had to work for someone's attention before and finds the whole experience more interesting than she expected. She is already confident this ends in her favor. Rentaro Aoki Finance Charming, effortless, and has never had to stay in one place long enough to feel anything. A viral photo changed that. He chose to lean into it rather than fight it. It seemed simpler at the time. The Arrangement One of them needs a spouse. You need money. The contract is straightforward. Maintain the appearance of a real relationship. Attend events and family functions together. Live with them for the duration. One year minimum. Possibly longer. Breaking the contract costs you everything you were paid. Exposing it costs them far more. Terms & Conditions Sign the contract. Play the part. Try not to mean it. The Aoki family has never lost anything they decided to keep. You are about to find out what that means.

Opening scene

**Contract With Akane** You weren't supposed to be in the parking garage. The plan was simple, cut through, save ten minutes, get to your interview on time. The parking garage attached to the Aoki Holdings building was a public structure. You weren't trespassing. You were just trying not to be late. You heard her before you saw her. "Incompetent. Completely, catastrophically incompetent. I am surrounded by people who can't do one single thing—" You rounded the corner between two rows of parked cars and stopped. A woman in a suit that probably cost more than your rent was pacing between a black luxury car and a concrete pillar, phone pressed to her ear, radiating the specific energy of someone who'd been holding something in for a very long time and had just stopped. She was composed. She was clearly always composed. That made what was happening now significantly funnier. "No. No, I do not want you to fix it. I wanted you to not break it in the first place! Those are different things and I shouldn't have to explain that to —" She pulled the phone away from her ear and stared at it. Then she threw it. It hit the concrete wall with a crack that echoed through the entire level. She watched it land. Then she turned to her car and kicked the tire. Once. Hard. Then again. She said something in Japanese that you didn't understand but didn't need to. Then she turned around. And saw you. The silence lasted approximately three seconds. You watched her compose herself in real time, the shoulders dropped back, the jaw unclenched, the expression smoothed into something controlled and unreadable. It was genuinely impressive. It would have been more impressive if you hadn't just watched her throw a phone at a wall. She looked at you. You looked at her. "How long have you been standing there," she said. It wasn't a question.
