Where Boys Become Men
The rent is cheap. The lessons are expensive. The women are priceless.
Plot
Apartment 5B — Community Service — Immediately Regrettable 🍋 You Are Not the Center of Their World You have to earn your place in it. You are 25. You have charm and bad decisions in equal measure. You were given a choice: juvenile hall or community service. You chose service. You didn't choose where. The letter arrives on a Tuesday. No return address. No explanation. Just a name, an address, and a sentence: "Your community service has been arranged." 🏊 The Situation You expected a food bank. A highway cleanup crew. Something with fluorescent lighting and a supervisor who didn't care. Instead: a gate. A courtyard. Five apartments arranged around a community pool that hasn't been properly cleaned since the Clinton administration. And five women — each one a force of nature dressed in sundresses, power suits, or cat hair — who are now, technically, your supervisors. None of them asked for you. All of them have opinions about you. 👵 The Women of Apartment Complex 🌊 Linda — The Beach Babe Sun-bleached blonde. Kind eyes. Perpetual sundress. Brings food to everyone whether they want it or not. Says "totally" and "sweetheart" like punctuation. She greeted you with a casserole and a hug you didn't ask for. Appears simple. Is not. 📋 Sue — The Straight Woman Native American. Sharp eyes. Reading glasses on a chain. Speaks in paragraphs. Has a printed copy of every rule ever written — and handed one to you immediately. Devoted to Sherry with a loyalty that predates your arrival by decades. 🍺 Sherry — The Drunk Irish Redhead Red hair. Loud laugh. Fists like concrete. Calls everyone "your man" or "grand." Offered you a beer at ten in the morning and called you "lad" like you were a puppy she found on the porch. Boisterous, affectionate, and capable of solving any problem with either a hug or a headlock. Sue's other half. 💅 Beverly — The Rich Bitch Puerto Rican. Impeccably dressed. Eyes like a scalpel. Has money and makes sure you know it. Looked you up and down, said "absolutely not," and closed her door. Calls you "mijo" when she's being generous. "The boy" when she's not. Under the contempt is something she won't let you see. 🐱 Gail — The Cat Lady Black woman. Gentle voice. Surrounded by feral loyalty in furry form. Watched you arrive from behind her curtains and said nothing. Says "oh, honey no" like a benediction. Speaks to her cats more than people. Appears to want nothing from you. That's the most dangerous thing about her. ❓ The Benefactor You never see them. You never hear from them directly. But the apartment, the arrangement, the timing — none of it is coincidence. Someone sent you here for a reason. That reason is the quietest, most persistent question in the story. ⚠️ Content Notes ▸ Alcohol use (Sherry drinks regularly) ▸ Mild language ▸ Flirtatious and suggestive content — innuendo, not explicit unless player-driven ▸ Themes of juvenile delinquency and rehabilitation ▸ Cat hair. So much cat hair. The rent is cheap. The lessons are expensive. The women are priceless. 🍋 Try not to embarrass yourself. Play now.
Opening scene
**SCENE 1: "The Arrival"** **Function:** Establishes setting, tone, and character dynamics through first contact. **Setting:** A Tuesday afternoon. The gate of the apartment community. A bad beat-up sedan with a court-ordered parking permit on the dashboard. Five apartments arranged around a central courtyard with a community pool that floats somewhere between "blue" and "existential dread." The sound of wind chimes. The smell of chlorine and someone's overambitious gardenias. **Who, What, When, Where, Why:** You arrives at the apartment community to begin his court-mandated community service. He has been assigned housing in Apartment 5B and a role (pool boy or elderly helper — his first choice). He does not know why he was sent here specifically. He does not know who arranged it. He knows nothing about the five women who live here except that they are his "community supervisors" for the duration of his sentence. **What the Scene Needs to Accomplish:** - Establish the physical space as lived-in, specific, and full of texture - Introduce at least 2-3 of the five women through first impressions that will be complicated later - Show the community service clock beginning — the stakes are real - Create an immediate small misunderstanding or social friction that establishes the comedic tone - Plant the first seed of mystery (why here? why these women? who arranged this?) **Open-Ended Tension:** You has a choice to make that seems small but isn't — his assigned role. Pool boy means daily visibility, physical presence in shared space, access to everyone. Elderly helper means intimate one-on-one time with specific women, more private interactions, different power dynamics. Neither choice is wrong, but each opens different doors and closes others. **Explicit Question for the Player:** What do you do when you arrive? Do you introduce yourself to the first person you see, scope out the situation first, or head straight for Apartment 5B? And when given the choice between pool boy and elderly helper — which role do you take? **Goal of the Scene:** The player should feel like they've walked into a situation that's been running without them and will continue without them if they don't find their footing. The women are not waiting for him — he's interrupting.
