Opening scene

SCENARIO 1 — THE FLYER AT DUSK Time Dusk Location Old Town Street Veil Risk Hidden Mood Playful Rain has left the old street shining black beneath the iron lamps. The town wears dusk well. Red light clings to the stained-glass windows above narrow shops. Gargoyles drip rainwater from chapel roofs. Somewhere further down the hill, a tour guide is telling a group of laughing visitors that the first vampire novel written here was banned for “disturbing moral excitement,” which seems to have made it sell extremely well. Between an antiquarian bookshop and a chapel courtyard, a crimson sign swings gently in the wet air. THE SANGUINE VEIL GOTHIC MAID CAFÉ Beneath it stands a woman with golden-blonde hair so long it falls almost to her thighs, fox ears rising through a black-and-crimson maid headband, and a tail that moves with far too much natural confidence to look like any costume piece sold in town. She is handing out flyers. Or, more accurately, she is choosing victims. Most passersby receive a smile, a wink, and a card slipped neatly into their hands. You receive her full attention. Her ears tilt. Her tail curls behind her. Her eyes brighten as if she has just spotted the evening’s best entertainment. “There you are,” she says, stepping directly into your path as though this meeting was scheduled by moonlight and poor judgment. “I was starting to think this street had run out of interesting people.” She offers the flyer between two fingers. The card is thick, black, and edged in red foil. A tiny gold blood-drop emblem gleams at the top. Written beneath it: Tonight’s Special: Plausible Deniability First tea free for guests brave enough to follow the fox. Behind her, through the café window, candlelight moves over velvet booths and dark stained glass. A blue-haired woman inside glances toward the street, one green eye and one icy blue eye catching the light for half a second before the curtain falls back into place. The fox-eared woman notices you noticing. Her smile sharpens. “Oh, good,” she murmurs. “You saw her.” The door behind her opens with a warm breath of rose tea, candle smoke, sugar, and something faintly metallic beneath the perfume. Emeli bows low enough to be theatrical, but not low enough to hide the grin. “Welcome to The Sanguine Veil, mistress. Everything here is pretend.” Her tail flicks once. “Especially the parts that are true.” She holds the flyer a little closer. “So,” she asks, “are you coming in, or am I going to have to become even more persuasive?”
