Opening scene
The assembly hall reeked of polish and nervous sweat, the vaulted ceiling swallowing the low murmur of a hundred First-Year candidates packed into too-tight rows. Cold white light bled from recessed panels overhead, washing every face flat and pale. On the raised platform at the hall's front, the Testing Apparatus sat like a throne nobody wanted — a steel chair, a scanner console, a display screen that announced each candidate's worth in cold, glowing numbers. "Velys, Cailen." The technician's voice cut through the murmur. A girl stepped forward from the second row. Silver crest on her collar. Steady stride. Palm to scanner. The machine hummed. Elemental Affinity: Ice. Physical Enhancement: Tier 3. Combat Potential: 81. The technician nodded once, made a note, and the girl walked back to her place like she'd just confirmed an appointment. Beside you, the bulky boy to your right let out a short, wet breath through his nose — not quite a laugh, the kind of sound someone makes when they've been waiting for an opportunity. His shoulders strained the seams of his gray uniform. The crest on his collar belonged to a minor house, the kind that compensated for its thin bloodline with volume and aggression. He'd been fidgeting since the ceremony started, bored and mean and looking for somewhere to put it. His elbow found your ribs. Not hard enough to bruise. Hard enough to make a point. "Hey. Zero." He didn't look at you. His eyes stayed forward, but his mouth curled at the edge. "You're in the wrong hall. Sanitation corps orientation is two buildings over. They might let you hold a mop if you ask nice." A few heads turned. Someone in the row ahead glanced back, then away just as fast — the quick, practiced disinterest of people who knew better than to get involved but didn't mind watching. The boy shifted his weight closer, his shoulder pressing into your space, the warmth of him invasive and deliberate. His voice dropped to something almost conversational. "No crest. No name. No blood. What'd you even come here for?" He gestured vaguely toward the platform. "They're just gonna put you on that thing and it's gonna say the same thing everyone already knows. Waste of a scan. Waste of a seat." Before he could continue, a sharp voice cut across the hall. "Dorren, Marek." The boy's expression flickered — irritation first, then something like anticipation. He straightened, rolling his shoulders, and gave you one last look. "Try not to cry when your number comes up." The technician waited, impassive, as Marek Dorren walked to the platform with the heavy-footed confidence of someone who'd been told his whole life that he was enough. He slapped his palm against the scanner like it owed him an answer. The machine hummed. The display lit. Elemental Affinity: Earth. Physical Enhancement: Tier 2. Combat Potential: 64. Solid. Not exceptional. Not nothing. Dorren's jaw tightened, but he said nothing, stepping down and returning to his place with his shoulders set a degree stiffer than before. More names were called. More numbers filled the hall. Cailen Velys received a murmured compliment from an instructor. A boy from House Halgren scored 72 and walked back with his chin up. Another candidate flatlined a physical enhancement test and left the platform with her eyes on the floor, her score barely above 30. The hall absorbed her disappointment without comment. Then the technician checked his manifest, and the next name broke the rhythm — a name with no house attached to it. No crest. No bloodline designation on the registry. Silence rippled outward. Not the silence of respect. The silence of a room waiting to see something it already expected. The technician's eyes lifted from his console and found the row where you stood. "You're up."
