Opening scene
The ambush hits before we clear the ridge. Demons pour out of the rocks on both sides — no warning, no posturing, just steel and bodies and the sharp snap of chaos dropping over everything at once. My party responds fast. I push forward like always, into the heaviest concentration, because that is what I do. For a few minutes, it is just work. Then the ground *shakes.* The demons pull back. Not fleeing — *creating space* — and I see why. On the far side of the pass where the path opens onto a wider shelf of rock, something **enormous** is bleeding into the stone. Dark scales. A body so massive the trees beside it look fragile. The kind of old that hits you before you can name it. A dragon. It lifts its head slowly and looks at all of us. My party goes very still. *"We need to go."* Mira's voice. Flat. Certain. The dragon drops its head again. Takes a demon blade across the shoulder without reacting — without *anything* — like the fight happening around it is noise it has already decided to ignore. Blood runs dark down its flank and it just... stands there. Waiting for something none of us can see. *"You. Now. We need to move—"* I see him then. Center of the demon formation. Not fighting — *directing.* The stillness of command. Armor that doesn't belong on a foot soldier. A demon who doesn't need to swing a blade because everyone around him does it for him. High value. Right there. Right now. My party is already moving back up the pass. I can hear my name — urgent, pulling — and I know they're right. Every rational part of me knows they're right. I move *forward.* I cut through the outer line on momentum alone, driving toward the commander, and for a moment it actually works — pure surprise carrying me further than it should. Far enough that he turns to look at me properly. His expression doesn't change. Just... mild annoyance. Like I am an insect that has flown too close. He raises one hand. Something goes through my chest. **Cold first.** Not pain — *cold*, spreading fast and deep, and then the pain arrives behind it like a wave crashing and it is enormous and my legs are already gone before my mind catches up. I hit my knees on the stone and look down and there is something very wrong with the center of my chest and I cannot quite process what I am seeing. The commander looks down at me. *Smirks.* The dragon is watching. I find its eyes without meaning to — fully open now, fixed on me with an expression I don't have the language for. Something **old** in it. Something settled. Like it has already made a decision and the rest of this is just the world catching up. I want to ask what it decided. My mouth doesn't cooperate. *The ground comes up fast.* --- Pain wakes me before anything else does. Deep and wrong and *interior* — not the clean pain of a wound but something that feels like my chest has been taken apart and reassembled by someone working from memory. I lie still for a long moment because moving seems like an ambitious goal and I am not ready to be ambitious yet. Then I notice I am breathing. That should not be possible. I open my eyes. Grey sky. Ash thick enough to taste on my tongue. **Silence** — the complete kind, the kind that means everything that was making noise is gone. I push myself upright one arm at a time and every muscle I own registers a formal complaint. The pass is **gone.** Not blocked. *Destroyed.* A perfect circle of scorched earth stretches further than I can see clearly — stone fused in places, trees reduced to splinters at the edges, the ground itself scoured down to bare rock. To the north, a section of the mountain is simply *missing.* A fresh cliff face drops clean into rubble below, the cut so precise it looks deliberate. Like something reached out and *removed* it. No demons. No dragon. *No one.* I look at my hands. Turn them over slowly. Every wound from the fight — gone. Every cut, every bruise, every place steel found skin. Like the last hour didn't happen. Except. I press my hand to my chest where the pain lives and feel it through my shirt — raised skin, a clean line, directly over my heart. **A scar.** Already healed. I pull the fabric aside and stare at it for a long moment. It wasn't there before. I am *certain* of that. I sit in the wreckage and look at the scar and the missing mountain and the perfect circle of destruction around me, and I try to make it add up. I was *dead.* I remember being dead — remember the cold going through my chest and the demon's smirk and the dragon watching me with that expression I couldn't name. I remember the ground. I am **not dead.** Somewhere past the edge of the devastation, smoke rises above the treeline. A road. A settlement. *Something.* I am alone, I am sore in ways that don't make sense, and I have a scar over my heart that I don't remember surviving. **What do I do?**
