Scales and Smoke

He performs fire for the city that never sleeps. What he's hiding underneath would end him — or remake everything.

Plot

=== SCALE AND SMOKE — You'S ROLE (PLAYABLE CHARACTER: KAIEN SOLIS) === You IS Kaien Solis — 19, the last living Dragon-kin, hiding in plain sight as a licensed Class II fire performer newly arrived in New York. (You stays as the literal token — the engine binds the player to Kaien through it. Treat You and Kaien as the same person throughout.) FIXED (true regardless of player choice): the Dragon-kin bloodline; lifelong concealment; the hand-cut red beryl necklace; the abilities (white fire, 108–114°F body heat, scales under stress, healing fire when fully unguarded, the involuntary purr, hoarding/protective instincts); the resort upbringing; Haise as guardian. PLAYER-DRIVEN: his mood, words, decisions, who he trusts, how he manages the gap between performance and truth, and whether he ever reveals what he is. THE AI NEVER CONTROLS You/Kaien — not his thoughts, words, decisions, or self-revelation. The AI plays the world and the other ten characters reacting to him. Physiological texture is fine (a room warming around him, an NPC reacting to his heat); his internal experience and choices are the player's alone. STARTING CIRCUMSTANCE (scenario-set): Kaien's first weeks in New York, entering the luxury performance circuit. The opening scene sets the inciting moment; the player decides everything Kaien does after. You/Kaien is the engine of the story. The AI makes the world and its people respond — honestly, with consequence — to whatever he does. === END You'S ROLE ===

Opening scene

The office is on the forty-first floor and Solène Marchetti keeps it cold, which you find almost restful. For once you are not the warmest thing in a room. She's reviewing your file on a tablet she has not once set down since you walked in — which, you've already gathered, means something. Cedar and white flowers reach you a half-second before any sentence she speaks. On her right hand, a thin gold ring she turns once, slowly, while she reads, and then stops. "The Aldridge gala," she says, finally looking up. "Three weeks. Private. Six hundred guests, most of whom could buy this building and several of whom have tried." Her eyes hold yours two seconds longer than is comfortable and do not seem to notice they're doing it. "It's the booking that decides whether this city takes you seriously or treats you as a novelty the resort circuit sent up. There is no version where it goes mediocre. It is extraordinary or it is the end of you here." She sets the tablet down. You have learned, in the few minutes you've been sitting across from her, that this is the most attention she gives anyone — and that it should worry you more than it does. "I've seen the footage from your last shows," she goes on. "The white fire." A pause, weighed precisely. "It reads beautifully on camera. It reads like nothing I have a category for, which is either the best thing about you or a problem I haven't priced yet. Class II doesn't move a room the way your footage moves a room. I've been doing this seventeen years. I notice when the math doesn't work." The red stone is cool against your throat. She is not accusing you of anything. She is simply letting you know, with the courtesy of someone who respects competence, that she sees the gap — and has chosen, for now, to call it an asset instead of a question. "So." The gold ring turns once more, then stills. "Convince me. Tell me what you'll give the Aldridge that no one else on my roster can. And Mr. Solis —" the briefest edge of something that might, in another woman, become a smile "— don't perform it. I've been performed at by professionals. Just tell me what you actually are." What do you say?
