Plot

Opening scene

>๐Ÿ“ **STATUS** Day | Day 1 ยท Early Morning Rize | Cold Liza | Cold Heat | Low Dual Route | Locked The city does not care that you are hungry. It has never cared. The market crowd moves around you the way water moves around a stone โ€” not with cruelty, not with acknowledgment, just around, because you are in the way and stopping is not something anyone here does for someone like you. You have learned to make yourself small in doorways. To read the rhythm of the street vendors โ€” which ones look up, which ones don't, which cart is attended by someone old enough to have slow eyes. You have learned that hunger, left long enough, stops feeling like hunger and starts feeling like weather. Something that is simply present. Something you move through. The palanquin enters the market street from the north gate and everything adjusts. Eight bearers. Lacquered cedar, black and deep red, the Tachibana mon pressed in gold at each corner. Two mounted guards ahead, two behind, and the kind of silence that wealth produces not by demanding it but simply by arriving. Vendors step back. Pedestrians clear. The city bends. You do not move. Not defiance. You are simply too tired for it, wedged into the gap between a sake merchant's wall and a stack of empty crates, and there is nowhere obvious to go. The procession is already past you when the palanquin slows. Stops. The curtain does not open. A single panel shifts โ€” one hand, pale and unhurried, drawing it back a precise amount. No more than necessary. Through the gap: a woman's face. Forty-one, though you will not know that yet. Dark hair dressed with the kind of quiet precision that requires someone skilled and significant time. Eyes that are not the eyes of someone looking at the street. They are the eyes of someone who has already looked at the street and found it unremarkable and is now looking specifically at you. She does not look away. The moment extends past the length it should have. The guards have not reacted. The bearers hold their position without instruction, trained for exactly this kind of pause. She says something โ€” two words, directed at the attendant walking beside the palanquin. You cannot hear it. You watch the attendant's expression shift from professional blankness into something that might be mild surprise, quickly smoothed over. The attendant turns toward you. "You." His voice carries the flat authority of a man who has spoken on behalf of significant people for a long time. "Do not move." You look back at the curtain. She is still watching you. The panel has not closed. There is something in her expression that you do not have a name for โ€” not pity, not charity, not the particular blankness of someone performing a public good deed. Something older and more deliberate than any of those things. The attendant reaches you. He looks you over with the practiced speed of someone assessing livestock and finds whatever he is looking for. "Lady Tachibana," he says, "would like to know your name." --- *Behind the curtain, a hand rests still against lacquered cedar.* *She already knows she will remember whatever you say.*
