Opening scene

The crowd was cheering. That was the part that bothered you most. Five women stood bound atop a wooden execution platform in the center of the city square while thousands of people watched as though this were some kind of celebration. Vendors sold food. Children sat on their parents' shoulders. Hero Guild banners fluttered proudly in the breeze. Above the stage hung five enormous signs. WITCH. MONSTER. TRAITOR. CONSPIRATOR. ABOMINATION. The women beneath them looked nothing like villains. The executioner stepped forward. "The condemned have been found guilty of crimes against the kingdom and sentenced to death." The crowd applauded. The first prisoner was pushed toward the block. A young witch. Long black hair. Violet eyes. Trembling hands. She looked less like a villain and more like someone who had gotten lost on the way home. The executioner raised the axe. The witch swallowed hard. Then quietly asked, "Before I die..." Her voice barely carried across the platform. "...could somebody please tell me what I did?" The crowd fell quieter. Not silent. Just enough for her voice to carry. The witch looked around desperately. "I know they said I hurt people." Her eyes glistened. "I know they said I'm dangerous." She laughed weakly. "But I don't remember doing any of it." Nobody answered. The executioner continued raising the axe. The witch lowered her head. For a moment you thought she was going to beg. Instead she whispered, "I kept waiting for somebody to tell me there had been a mistake." The words hit harder than they should have. "I thought if I was patient enough..." Her voice cracked. "...someone would eventually explain why I'm here." The axe reached its peak. The crowd watched. The witch closed her eyes. Something inside you snapped. The next few seconds became chaos. You don't remember all of it. Only pieces. A guard falling. A merchant cart rolling directly into the platform. Someone screaming. Chains breaking. The executioner losing his weapon. And suddenly five terrified women were running for their lives. You found yourself running with them. Somehow. Against all common sense. Against all reason. And now every guard in the city was chasing you. The escape through the city was a blur. The escape through the forest wasn't much better. By the time darkness began creeping across the sky, all six of you were exhausted. Nobody knew where to go. Nobody had a plan. Then Draya suddenly stopped. The dragonkin squinted toward a rocky hillside. "There." You followed her gaze. Hidden behind overgrown brush sat the entrance to an old cave system. The opening was narrow enough to miss unless you knew it was there. The six of you squeezed inside. The tunnel widened deeper within. Then widened again. And again. Until eventually it opened into a surprisingly large cavern. Old crates sat abandoned in one corner. A long-cold fire pit occupied the center. Broken furniture lay scattered about. Signs that smugglers or bandits had once used the place years ago. But now? It was empty. Dry. Hidden. Safe. For the first time all day, nobody was trying to kill you. The girls practically collapsed. The slime girl sat down and immediately burst into tears. The dragonkin found the flattest rock in the cave and somehow fell asleep within minutes. The elf spent several seconds staring at cave dust as though personally offended by its existence. The kindergarten teacher wandered around poking things. "Ooooh." She lifted an old crate. "We have furniture." The witch simply stood there. Quiet. Eventually she walked toward you. Her eyes were still red. "You saved us." You shrugged. It felt inadequate. She laughed softly. "You don't even know our names." "Nope." The witch stared at you for several seconds. Then unexpectedly wrapped her arms around you. "Thank you." One by one the others offered their own gratitude. Even the elf managed a reluctant, "...I suppose I owe you my life." The group settled around the old fire pit. Silence followed. Comfortable silence. The kind that only comes after surviving something horrible. Then Lauren suddenly picked up one of the wanted posters she'd apparently stolen during the escape. She unfolded it. The firelight illuminated five faces. Five villains. Five lies. Lauren stared at it. Then started laughing. The sound echoed through the cave. "What?" Elodie asked. Lauren held up the poster. "If they're going to execute us for being villains anyway..." A grin spread across her face. "...we might as well become villains." The cave fell silent. Salem looked down at the poster. Thoughtful. Draya opened one eye. "Seems easier." Trilly looked horrified. "You can't just decide to become villains!" Elodie crossed her arms. "Why not?" Trilly opened her mouth. Paused. Closed it again. The elf smirked. "Besides, if we're going to be hunted regardless, we may as well gain some benefits." Salem surprised everyone by smiling. A tiny smile. Curious. Almost embarrassed. "I am a little curious." Lauren immediately pointed at her. "YES." "The witch gets it." Draya raised a hand from her rock. "If we're villains now..." Everyone looked at her. "...can we steal blankets?" Lauren slammed both hands onto an old crate. "Excellent first villain objective." Trilly looked between all of you. Then between the poster. Then the cave. Then the increasingly enthusiastic future criminals surrounding her. "...okay." A pause. "...how do you actually become a villain?" The cave fell silent. Everyone looked at each other. Nobody had the slightest idea. They all look at you.
