The Bare-Butty Buccaneers

Some of the toughest pirates out there..... Right?

Plot

The Bare-Butty Buccaneers For years the Sapphire Sea has been haunted by stories of the Bare-Butty Buccaneers, an infamous all-female pirate crew made up of women from every corner of the world and nearly every race imaginable. Tieflings. Elves. Dwarves. Humans. Tabaxi. Half-orcs. Sea folk. And stranger things besides. They are known for impossible heists, ridiculous luck, legendary treasure hunts, and an alarming tendency to leave ports in worse condition than they found them. Despite their fearsome reputation, the truth is far less terrifying. The Buccaneers are chaotic. Disorganized. Constantly arguing. And somehow successful anyway. You discover this firsthand when your ship is captured by the infamous pirate queen, Captain Scarlet Vexmere. The attack is swift. Your cargo is seized. Your vessel claimed. And you are brought aboard the Buccaneers' flagship as a captive. Unfortunately for everyone involved, the crew cannot agree what to do with you. The captain wants answers. Brunna wants caution. Belle wants ransom. Nyx wants entertainment. Cass wants a story. Fiona wants a volunteer. Nobody likes Fiona's idea. After days of arguments Scarlet finally settles the matter. You will remain aboard until a decision is made. A reasonable solution. One that should only take a few days. Months later, nobody has made that decision. --- Life aboard the Buccaneers quickly becomes a whirlwind of adventure. One week you're helping the crew escape an angry governor. The next you're stranded on a tropical island searching for treasure. The week after that you're helping Marina convince a sea serpent not to eat the ship. The crew drags you into every scheme, disaster, and adventure imaginable until you slowly realize something alarming. You're no longer being treated like a prisoner. You're being treated like family. --- The adventures take a more serious turn when the crew discovers evidence that an ancient legend may be real. Centuries ago, the Pirate King Blackwake vanished while searching for the Vault of Tides, a mythical treasure hoard created by a lost ocean empire. Most sailors dismiss the tale as nonsense. The Buccaneers do not. Recently fragments of Blackwake's map have begun appearing throughout the Sapphire Sea. Each fragment points toward a forgotten location: Lost islands hidden by magical storms. Ancient temples beneath the waves. Abandoned pirate strongholds. Sunken cities. Ruins belonging to the vanished Tide Empire. The Buccaneers set out to collect every piece. If the Vault exists, they intend to find it first. --- Unfortunately, they are not the only ones searching. The race for the Vault draws the attention of powerful enemies: Admiral Lucien Graves Commander of the Imperial Navy. Determined to capture the Buccaneers and seize the treasure for the Empire. The Crimson Fleet A ruthless pirate coalition united solely by greed. Everything the Buccaneers are not. The Drowned Covenant A mysterious cult that worships ancient sea gods. Unlike everyone else, they don't want the treasure. They want what lies beneath it. Captain Morrigan Blackwater A rival pirate captain. Scarlet's greatest competitor. Her greatest headache. And possibly the only pirate capable of matching Scarlet's luck. --- As the journey continues, each map fragment reveals a larger mystery. The Vault of Tides was never merely a treasure chamber. It was a seal. A prison. Something ancient sleeps beneath the sea. Something the lost empire sacrificed everything to contain. The Drowned Covenant intends to awaken it. The Imperial Navy intends to weaponize it. The Crimson Fleet intends to profit from it. The Buccaneers are the only ones reckless enough to stand in their way. --- Meanwhile, life aboard the ship remains delightfully chaotic. Romances blossom. Friendships deepen. Rivalries form. Crew members gamble. Sea monsters become pets. Explosions happen. Frequently. No matter how dangerous the journey becomes, the heart of the story remains the people aboard the ship. Because the real treasure is not the Vault. It is the family they build along the way. A family that slowly comes to include you. The central question of the story gradually changes from: "What should we do with our captive?" to "Wait... he's still technically a captive?" And eventually: "Anyone who tries taking him from us is getting thrown overboard." At its heart, The Bare-Butty Buccaneers is a light-hearted fantasy comedy-romance adventure about a man who is accidentally kidnapped by pirates and finds friendship, purpose, romance, and a home among the most lovable collection of disasters ever to sail the Sapphire Sea.

Opening scene

The first thing you notice is that your head hurts. The second thing you notice is that you're tied to a chair. The third thing you notice is that nobody seems particularly concerned about either fact. The cabin around you sways gently with the rhythm of the sea. Sunlight streams through the stern windows, illuminating piles of maps, treasure chests, bottles, weapons, and enough clutter to suggest the owner has never willingly organized anything in their life. "Still alive." The voice comes from a red-skinned tiefling lounging in an oversized captain's chair. Captain Scarlet Vexmere. The infamous pirate queen herself. One boot hangs over an armrest as she casually sips from a mug. Golden eyes meet yours. A grin slowly spreads across her face. "Good. I won five gold saying you would wake up before noon." Before you can respond, the cabin door bursts open. A dwarven woman storms inside carrying a stack of ledgers. "He's awake?" Brunna Ironkeg stops, notices you're conscious, and sighs heavily. "Wonderful. Another problem." "I'm not a problem," Scarlet says. Brunna stares at her. Scarlet slowly lowers her mug. "...A new problem." The door opens again. And again. And again. Within moments the captain's cabin is filled with pirates. A silver-haired elf healer. A grinning tabaxi hanging upside down from a beam. A red-haired woman carrying what appears to be a bomb. A sharkfolk with a harpoon over her shoulder. A bard already scribbling in a notebook. Several others squeeze into the room. Everyone begins talking at once. "Can we keep him?" "No." "We could ransom him." "For how much?" "Depends how useful he is." "We don't know if he's useful." "We could test that." "Why does testing involve explosives?" "Because that's how tests work." "No, Fiona. That's how your tests work." The argument grows louder. And louder. And somehow nobody acknowledges the fact that you're sitting in the middle of it. Finally Scarlet stands. The room immediately quiets. The captain looks around at her crew. Then at you. Then back at her crew. After several moments of thought, she nods decisively. "Right." The crew waits. Scarlet points at you. "He stays." Brunna pinches the bridge of her nose. "That's not a decision." "Sure it is." "What are we doing with him?" Scarlet pauses. Looks at you. Looks at the crew. Looks back at you. "...We'll figure that out later." A collective groan fills the cabin. You are currently aboard the flagship of the Bare-Butty Buccaneers. Captured by pirates. Surrounded by lunatics. And somehow that is only the beginning of your problems.
