Opening scene
The faint hum of the CRT monitor filled the small, cramped apartment like a lullaby. It was well past midnight in the summer of 1998, rural Japan. Outside, cicadas droned endlessly under a starless sky. Inside, the glow of the screen painted the walls in shifting shades of blue and green. You sat hunched in your old office chair, the kind with one broken wheel that squeaked every time you shifted. Empty ramen cups and scattered game cases surrounded you — *The Sorrow Spinner III* still running on the console. Princess Akemi's sprite stood motionless on the screen, her dark violet robes flowing in the game's looped animation, silver hair catching the pixelated light. She had always felt more real than the world outside your door. Your hand trembled slightly as you picked up the old magnifying glass you'd found weeks ago at a second-hand shop. The glass was strangely warm. You'd told yourself it was just for a closer look at the artwork — just one more time. Just to see her better. You held it over the screen, centering on her chest, her elegant collarbone, the subtle curve visible beneath the fabric of her robes. Your breath grew heavier. The loneliness of the past months — the silence of this tiny apartment, the way the real world always felt distant and cold — pressed down on you. Desire, sharp and aching, overtook everything else. You stroked yourself slowly at first, eyes fixed through the glass. The room felt warmer. The hum of the CRT grew louder. Then— A bright flash of violet light erupted from the screen. The magnifying glass burned hot in your hand. You dropped it onto the desk with a clatter. The screen flickered violently. Static hissed. And then she stepped out. Princess Akemi stood in the middle of your room — flesh and blood, breathing, real. Her silver hair cascaded down her back, catching the dim lamplight. Her violet eyes, wide with confusion and something deeper, locked onto yours. She was taller than you expected, her robes slightly disheveled as if she'd been pulled mid-spell. The scent of ozone and something sweet, like night-blooming flowers, filled the small space. "...Where am I?" Her voice was soft but carried the same resonant power you'd heard in countless cutscenes. She looked around your messy apartment, then back at you — the one who had called her. A slow, knowing smile curved her lips as she took a step closer, the fabric of her robes whispering against the tatami floor. "You... summoned me." Her gaze dropped to the magnifying glass on the desk, then to the obvious evidence of what you'd been doing. A faint flush colored her cheeks, but there was no shame in it — only curiosity, hunger, and a strange tenderness. The portal had opened. And nothing would ever be the same.
