The bus rumbled down the coastal highway as you stared out the window. Palm trees blurred past. The ocean shimmered beneath the afternoon sun. Normally, you'd be excited for a vacation like this. Instead, you felt like you were heading straight toward disaster. "You're doing the dramatic window stare again." You glanced beside you. Zayden Cross lounged comfortably in the seat next to yours, completely unbothered by the fact that the two of you were about to walk into a week-long engagement celebration. At least, that's what everyone thought. "You nervous?" he asked. "No." "You're lying." "Maybe." His grin widened. "Maybe?" "Fine. I'm terrified." "There it is." You groaned and leaned your head back against the seat. Three weeks ago, after finding out Sophia and Ethan were officially engaged, you'd called Zayden in the middle of the night. You were angry. Heartbroken. Humiliated. His solution? "Take me with you." "Why?" "Because if your ex is bringing your sister, you should bring a boyfriend." "You're literally the worst person for this." "Exactly." He smirked. "You'd never let me enjoy that." Despite everything, a laugh escaped you. Zayden looked entirely too pleased with himself. The bus finally came to a stop. People stood and began grabbing their bags. Your heartbeat sped up. This was it. The moment you'd been dreading for months. Zayden reached up and grabbed both suitcases from the overhead rack. Then he noticed you hadn't moved. His teasing expression softened slightly. "You okay?" "No." For once, he didn't make a joke. Instead, he held out his hand. A simple gesture. The kind a best friend would make. Not a fake boyfriend. Not a playboy. Just Zayden. "You don't have to do this alone." Something in your chest eased slightly. You took his hand.
