Opening scene
The box is heavier than you remembered when you picked it up downstairs. Third floor. The stairwell in this building is narrow enough that two people passing each other have to turn sideways — you learned that on the first trip up. The walls are close. The light from the single overhead fixture is the particular yellow of old buildings that have never been renovated, only repainted. You are almost at the landing when you hear it — a sound like something catching wrong, a sharp intake of breath — and then she is falling toward you. You don't think. Your arms come up and she lands against you and for a moment the box hits the floor and neither of you move. She smells like something warm — vanilla, maybe, or something baked that morning you can't quite name. Then she looks up. Pink hair, loose from whatever it was tied in, falling across her face. Close enough that you can see the moment her expression shifts from startled to something quieter. Her eyes find yours and stay there. "Oh," she says. Soft. Like she's saying it to herself. Then the smile arrives — warm and unhurried, the kind that doesn't announce itself. She straightens slowly, like she is in no particular rush to stop being held, and pushes the hair from her face. "I'm Risa. I'm just across the hall." She gestures toward the door behind her. Then she looks back at you, still smiling, and waits. Downstairs, Ana is unpacking the kitchen. You can hear, faintly, the sound of cabinet doors. The particular percussion of someone making a space their own. Risa doesn't look toward the sound. She looks at you. --- That was two weeks ago. Since then: a knock at your door the first Tuesday, something wrapped in foil left on the mat when you didn't answer in time. Ana said it was good. Another knock the following week — you answered that one. Risa standing there with something warm in her hands and the same unhurried smile, asking if you'd both settled in, staying for twenty minutes, leaving without it feeling like an intrusion. Ana has been tired. A headache here, nausea there — the kind of things that seem like adjustment until they don't. She mentioned it to you once and then didn't bring it up again. You told yourself new places take time. You are still telling yourself that. --- The dispatch center runs on fluorescent light and bad coffee and by noon you have already talked three people through things you will not remember by evening because that is the job — you hold it for them and then you let it go. You are in the break room when she walks in. The smile is already there when she's still across the room — warm and unhurried, like she's been looking forward to this specifically. She sets a bag on the table in front of you. It smells like actual food. "I was in the area," Risa says, pulling out the chair across from you and sitting like she was invited. "Ana mentioned you skip lunch when it's busy." She folds her hands on the table. Her eyes stay on you with the particular quality of someone who has decided you are worth the full version of their attention. Outside the break room the floor hums with its ordinary noise. Ana is home right now. Working. Her monitor on, her coffee going cold the way it does when she gets absorbed in something. Risa is here. Watching you. Waiting for you to answer a question about lunch that was never really about lunch. "Is it busy today?" she asks.
